Hi there
Looks like I ve bought a duffer van (n) !!!
Can anybody help me please.
I have got a smoking problem with my newly bought second hand van, well I say newly bought its done me five months ok but now its devloped a issue thats doing my head in :bang:.
I know its a diesel and they do smoke from time to time but the vans been a saint until recently.
It went in for its mot and passed with flying colours inc emmisions but now I have noticed if I let the van idle for a short amount of time or get held up in sitting traffic on touching the throttle pedal to move away the van puffs out a few seconds of blueish smoke from the exhaust ???
Its just had a service with new oil n filter and not sure if this is linked to the problem I also put a treatment of diesel redex through the tank !!, as advised it would be a good idea  .
I now wish I had not put it in as I cannot recall it ever smoking before this colour it just used to get the normal puff of black load smoke as most do.

Any body got any ideas or had the same problem at all ???, the van starts n runs as its new still , its just got the blue smoke thing, its just like the old days when the old ford cortinas had the valve stem seal problems , do you think it could be them if so can they be changed in sitchu without removing the head ? or could it be a duffa turbo seal thing???
Any guidance would be great.
Thanks

Andy

Mine was doing this!
Garage and diesel injection specialist couldn't find any faults.
The smoking gradually got worse. The turbo seal blew (on Friday), lunching the engine. Don't know if it was related or just one of those things.

few more details (year/model) would be helpful.

Hi there
,

The vans a 2004 1800 lwb maxi version
I think its an iveco engine as removed the cover on the top and saw iveco on the engine.

Just changed the fuel filter too yesterday and still no good , ie still puffs smoke .

I thank anybody in advance for help into fixing this.

Thanks
Andy

Hello again,

Thanks for the turbo seal reply it is my fear that it could be that  but not too sure as I was hoping it would be cured when I changed the fuel filter but that was clean fuel that came from that when drained out (n).

So I guess I better keep an eye out for a replacement turbo, did you have to fit a turbo or did you fit a new engine ?

Thanks
Andy

hi, I too have a 2.8jtd its a2006 model with 40000 miles on the clock, it really smokes (blue) when cold, not noticable on tickover, but when you pull off and rev the engine its very bad.it seems to be ok when fully warmed up. I was thinking if it was turbo or piston rings or even valve seals? any help?

Hi all
If you’re putting cheap supermarket derv in it will smoke.
I’ve been down this road before, let it run low and put some esso or b.p in it you will notice the difference.
Not only will it feel more powerful and stop smoking but it will pull better mpg, on my trip computer I get an extra 5 mpg which makes it the same price as the cheap stuff.

Good luck.

Hi Chris

I never run on supermarket fuel as it is poor qualitiy, I totally agree with you on that part.
Noticed that a long time ago when you could get alot more milage on a tenner of shell as aposed to a tenner tesco fuel (n).
I only ever use bp fuel, but will give it a try on esso or shell n see how it goes I guess.
Does any body know a good place to get my turbo reconditioned just to rule that out too ?
It`s a shame really cos the van does all you ask from it and its comfy to travel in, I thought buying a big van with a big engine I would have no problems but never had a bad smoker like this before.
Is this a common thing with iveco engines does any body know ? and do the smaller cc hdi enginge`s suffer the same problems ?

I suppose if the new fuel and turbo fail to rectify the smoke I will have to have it apart n re ring it and do the valve seals etc.

Or does any body know of a good low milage turbo for sale any where, I notice there is a set of recon injectors for sale on ebay is this worth buying and changing them can any body advise ?

Thanks for the help n info so far maybe soon we might have an answer to cure the prob for everybody :).

Cheers
Andy

Hi All
Is the redex still in the tank or have you refilled since?
What sort of miles has the van done?
As you are probably aware blue smoke is usually oil being burnt.
You say you had it serviced did the problem start before the service or after.

Hi Cris,

Have run the tank right low and half filled tank with fresh derv, the vans done just over 100k but has full main dealer servive history as it was there parts dept spare van.
Yea on the same line of thoughts re the blue smoke just trying to find where its coming from.
Got my thoughts on valve stem seals, as its prob the cheapest place to start and can do cambelt at the same time, just hope I can do it with the head still on as long as the pistons come up far enough to stop valves droppin into pot.
The smoke started just before I had it serviced so that`s why I had it done as I thought the oil looked podgy so could do with a change !!!!!.
So had it done n still no joy, done fuel filter n no differance still puffs.
Any ideas are most welcome as don`t really want a smokey van n if I cannot sort it will be in the local car auction n look for another one.

Look forward to hear from any one who can help.

Thanks
Andy

Hi All
100k isn’t a lot for a diesel so I think you would be extremely unlucky to have a problem with the piston rings.
On a properly serviced vehicle you shouldn’t have any big problems for at least double that mileage.
I’m thinking valve stem oil seals more possible but again you would be unlucky at 100k.
My gut feeling is turbo, I’m afraid my knowledge of turbo’s is a bit limited I was a HGV mechanic many years ago, but turbo’s were very rare on lorries then.
Good Luck

MIL Lamp on ,no code ? Ducato 2.8jtd 2005

Hi everybody,
Well just an quck update on my post for the the smoking 2.8jtd 2005, eventually got roung to fixing it, it was a faulty or just worn out kkk turbo.(n)
Cause for smoking on pull off after tickover =Too much end float in the turbo shaft.

New problem if any body can help with this one ????

The Mil lamp comes on if you ask the van to drive at reasonable speed, then it seems to go down on power till you reset the lamp.

Only problem is there is no fault code stored in the module for the reader to read ????

Any body had the same problem or know a cure for it ???

It was doing this before the turbo was changed so would not think its related to that, but if I recall it started to do it after service and fuel filter change ?

I do like my ducato buts its more time n money to look after than a pet !!!

Anybody got any ideas ????

Ps got a kkk turbo that needs a rebuild if any body needs one, I see they do kits on ebay for 50 notes if that helps any one.
Also got short block that needs no 4 crank re ground n new con rod cap if that also helps any one get there van back on the road.

PPS The Mil lamp sometimes stays on if you leave the van for day or so it then needs the code reader to put out, then sometimes it goes out on its own at start up .

hi all steven here from dublin i have a fiat ducato 05 it has 85000 thousand miles on the clock its a 2.8jtd there is blue smoke coming out of the exhaust i checked the exhaust and found a lot of oil on the tip of the exhaust when i am on a motorway the power is fine the engine is fine and no smoke its just when i am in traffic or stoped at lights the smoke is flying out there is no oil leak as i put some cardboard on the ground for a couple of nights and not a drop of anything please could anyone help with this problem could it be the head gaskett. there is plenty of oil when i check the dip stick thanks in advance for any help

Hi there buddy
Mine done exactly the same as yours is doing,
Mine was the turbo was pooped out, too much play in the shaft, luckily I managed to get a engine that had done a big end in complete with turbo on so saved a bomb n swapped turbo over to mine, job done good as new, no more smoking just other issues.
If you have kkk turbo , you can buy rebuild/seal kits off that well known auction site, there even has been turbos that come up for sale.
I think there is one on there now listed for citroen but will go on yours ?
hope its of some help, might not be but it was on mine.
Good luck
