Hi all
My Sedici 1.9 multijet 2007 80000 miles is very slow starting after its been standing 10 to 12 hours, Once started it will be alright and start on the turn of key until its been standing again. Glow plugs are ok. It just turns over and over nearly starting and then after 10 to 20 seconds fires up its like there is no Diesel there. Filter has been changed and I cannot see any leaks anywhere. The pump in the fuel tank is working when I turn the key for glow plugs for a few seconds then stops. Once going its fine pulls well and drives well. The other thing is the tick over sometimes its lumpy like a old petrol engine running on 3 cylinders but this is running on all 4 if I give it a rev its tick over is back to normal. Oh and the EGR has been blocked of for around 9 months. MPG is 42.6
Ideas please Regards Stephen.

have you tried cleaning the egr? mine was a bugger till i gave it an overhaul, has been great for the last 6 months since, also i stopped using fuel from morrisons problem hasn't returned since, only discovered this when i moved house and it was easier to fill up from the local tescos.

Hi thanks for reply :) egr is clean and blanked off so dont think its that and I get my diesel from anywhere ( asda morrisons sainsburys or bp ) regards Stephen.

Ok so still have problem
I think the diesel is running back to the tank over several hours so i get no fuel though for a few seconds when starting
I think it could be seals in filter where the pipes fit can they be changed or is a new filter assembly the only option.

Our sedici seems to have similar issues (roughly same age + mileage)

Searching google for 1.9 vauxhall diesel faults often helps (similar engine but more commonplace)

Try... http://www.autoinsider.co.uk/problems/show.php?problem=5178
Looks like spill off pipes seem a common problem.
Parking front downwards on a hill may help diagnose. (maybe easier starting as fuel is kept in pipes)

Ours has a vacuum leak... Hissing noise inside until brake pedal is pressed.
We were advised by a helpful forum member "Varescrazy" this effects the running of the engine.(y)

We did also worry about compression + gunked up inlet manifold.

Sadly we are trying to spend as little money on our sedici as possible after using a rogue garage.... This is off topic but....

Words of warning...
Dodgy Droitwich Garage damaged door on lift + said would put right.
Finally, one month later, booked in for repair... Did a cheap bodge job + used filler on bent door + sprayed both doors for "colourmatching"... Said would put right... 2nd attempt (masking tape lines everywhere) + totally bodged again.
Wanted us to pay for services before giving us keys!
Refused to give us insurance details + had to threaten to invoice for a courtesy car for keys.
Took day off work to take to three repairers for qoutes + sent recorded delivery to garage at our cost.

Garage sent letter asking for payment of services.
Sent letter + copy of invoice notifying we had to pay a speciailist garage to put right their mechanical services due to over tightened cam belt.
Letter ignored... More letters sent... Ignored.
Reported to trading standards... Tried to ignore.
Finally after 5 months agreed to put it through their insurers.
Insurance handlers refused to pay full repair costs and tried to trick us into cashing undervalued cheque using dishonest tactics to settle.
Had to use solicitors (expensive money grabbers) that were ignored (costing us)
Had to take to small claims court (stressful, expensive + time consuming) to recover costs (you cannot recover full legal costs)... + only an option if you have evidence to support your claim.
Found out garage lied to their insurers by not mentioning they attempted to repair the car!
Luckily... We took dated pictures + video evidence on our phones.

Their insurers finally acted a "reservation of rights" on them + refused to represent them in court.
We won costs for a fully revised repair qoute + interest + a day sat opposite a lying b4574rd who continued to try deny liability for any costs.

Hi Chumbamoo

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with a garage. I myself have very little faith in garages in fact in 38 years of motoring and 40 plus vehicles I have only bought 4 from garages 2 of which were brand new. Anyway thanks for your info I shall be getting some new leak of pipe as I think that seams to be the place to start. I have just replaced the seals in the fuel filter where the pipes connect and they do seam a tighter fit but have not tried starting the car yet as in needs to stand several hours for the bad starting to be there.

Thanks Again Stephen.

Cheers Stephenbebop,

Hope the filter seals do the job.(y)

Would be great to hear of a cheap fix...

Hi
OK so the seals have made no difference to my starting issue and I still haven't had time to get leak off pipes and fit them. But tonight when I come out of work I watched my glow plug light and its only on for 2 seconds now I know they work but should they work longer than 2 seconds?. Also I turned them on and off 3 times and I think it started a little better but still sounds like its short of diesel.
Your thoughts please
Regards Stephen.

After researching the forum.... Prety sure the Sedici diesels are self purging. (shouldn't need to bleed the fuel lines for air when fuel filter is changed or run dry).

Not a diesel expert but.. Think the glow plugs are only needed in severe cold as modern diesels rely more on compression to start.

Other common cold start issues could relate to....
Weak starter motor +
Weak battery....... (Will turn but not enough power to crank at compression).
Faulty glow plugs.
Glow plug relay.
Injectors/ seals.
Compression.
Crankshaft position sensor.
Camshaft position sensor.
Temperature sensor.

Still hoping it's just the leak off pipes...

Glow plugs will be on for longer than the light, from a few secs more, to a few minutes more, for emmission purposes.

It's important to note that 'Cleaning the EGR valve' should mean taking off the black bit where the multi-pin fits, and testing to see if you can compress the spring with your thumb, it should be quite easy. If you can't, give it a squirt of WD, then try twisting the spring mechanism, without popping it off the shaft. When it rotates and pushes in and pops out, then clean it all with carbon cleaning stuff, and clean the little plate on the end of the shaft that is the valve. Reassemble and Bob's your aunt, (well he is on Youp**n).

OK so today I changed the leak off pipes :) removed the plastic conections off the top of injectors and there was diesel sitting in the top off the injectors but only a little drop in the pipe on number 4 injector orher 3 were bone dry car had stud for 25 hours so somehow its got to be letting air in so giving me bad starting hope these new pipes cure my problem next thing could be the o rings on the connections if its still the same .

Ok bit of an update my car is starting a lot better since i changed the leak off pipes it turns over around 4 to 5 seconds and away she go's so the leak off pipes have made a big diferance :) will keep updating if things change.
Stephen.
