Hi, I have a punto mk2 1.2, I want to make the gearstick shorter in it, the gear knob flew off the other week joining the motorway which didnt please me (n) It has since started doing it all the time! Now it is off, I have taken the gaiter and the lift reverse mech. off so I'm left with just the shaft. What I want to know now is how to shorten it. The actual gear stick looks like it is 2pieces with the top sleved into the bottom? Could I cut an inch or two out the top and thead the shaft to the size of a nice gear knob? then cut the same amount i took out the stick out the lift reverse in the middle and plastic weld it back together? I cant take a photo of the gear stick if it helps, cheers guys (y)

i have a old gear stick assembly so if i get time tomorrow then i shall get onto trying this and seeing if the reverse and everything works.

Stop being a girl and buy a B&M short shift, they're the dogs danglies.

No, it isn't that, Ill try and explain (bit crap so sorry in advance!!) you have 1st top left, 2nd directly under, 3rd in top middle 4th directly under but with 5th and rev, reverse is to the right abit and down. so basically, what the pull thing does, is bang against a plastic lump, which make it impossible to locate reverse without first lifting the pull thing up, basically what that does is just gives you an extra 1/2" leg room to get rev. When you loose that lift up thing, it means when you want to shift into 5th, there is no stop to push against so you have to fart-arse about trying to get in, im sure you'd get used to it though. you'd see what i ment instantly if you pull the gaiter of the gear stickim terrible at explaining stuff, sorry mate

Basically, you get the gear knob off, mine just fell off in my hand one day, it isnt treaded or anything, it is pushed on there. I guess a few decent tugs and your have it off but if not, get a big open ended spanner 30mm or something, and put it on the bottom of the gear knob and beat it off with hammer, that way your disipate the force of the blow from the hammer and it will come off easier (also harder to break stuff like that!) Then what you have is a spring which was pushed up against the bottom of the gear knob and the top of the pull up thing, pull that spring off, maybe try twisting and pulling so's not to bugger the spring up. next the gaiter, just hook your hands in and and pull the sqare plastic bit the gaiter is attached too, you cant see it, but that is what clicks into the centre piece. If i remember it was easiest to pull it off pulling the back bit 1st. once you have the gaiter disconnected the whold lot should just pull off in your hand, i can email some pics of the steps if you like bud.
