Technical Shocking!!

Technical Shocking!!

On 4x2 the shock mounts on a bracket on the leafspring while on 4x4 mmounts on a bracket on the axle. mkI and mkII 4x4 should use the same as the susp is the same. Do'nt know about 4x2

Well my Dad very kindly did some digging around while I was at work today but its bad news... the 4x4 mk1 and 2wd mk1 have different shocks as they have different part numbers. This is pre' 86 so its before the omega suspension. It does make sence that the 4x4 would use different ones though...fortunately the early and late 4x4's all use the same ones so not a problem to get hold of...

How does £30 each sound to other 4x4 owners out there?

Hey all,

Got the old grey matter fired up a moment ago... you might've seen the plooms of smoke originating from gloucestershire!!

The dampers control the sprung weight of a car and looking through my cars handbook the mk1 2wd had a rear axle and leaf spring design just like the 4x4. But correct me if I am wrong but the weight of the car above is pretty much identical to the 2wd? Or is the extra weight in the gearbox and the propshafts worth accounting for? They are quite heavy I supose, and they are sprung too. I just really want to justify why there are different part numbers really.

Any thoughts?
Si

I think you're probably right, the damping of Mk1 4x2 and 4x4 are going to be pretty close. (Potentialy a bit softer of 4x4 to respond to bumps faster I suppose)
But the 4x4 ones might have a little more travel, to aid off road ariculation... What we need to know is the compressed and extended lengths of a 4x2 and 4x4 shock. Anyone got some lying around to measure?!
However even if the 4x4 one does have less travel it's not the end of the world, only reduces offroad peformance. Do you not have a anti-roll fitted anyway?

Well Panda Van kindly measured the fully extended and compressed lengths. I can say that fully extended lengths are the same but without taking them off the car I cant be sure of the compressed length for the mk1 4x4 shocks.
I think I will go for the dampers I can get in my local shop as they are definately the right ones and £30 each from what I have heard is a good price.

It is a shame I cant make use of Panda vans ones, but there are a few people on here with mk1's who might perhaps need them more and they at least know they are definately the correct ones.

Lets hope so, i'll be putting them on ebay soon if no one on here wants them - £35 for the pair - bargain !!!

Well that's interesting, can I ask what the measurement is? Be sure to measure the compressed length when they are off the car for future reference!

How much are the mk1 shocks compared with 4x4 ones?
£30 a shock is getting to the point you could get a nice after market one as long as you can get a roughly similar stroke length and get the same end fittings, ie eyelet not threaded rod. (For example Procomp do shocks from £38.10, though they probably don't do one short enough for a Panda)

Incidently having the shroud break off is no reason to replace a shock, just cut it off and run with out it. It's not until the seal at the top of the damper fails and it starts leaking you need to replace them.

Howdy!
The measurement was roughly 48cm from the top eyelet to the base of the damper at full extension. I'll post up the exact measurements when I take the damper off so that people can see for future reference.

I also agree that the shroud breaking off isnt reason to replace them, but they make a very annoying and increasingly loud squeek when compressed now so it wont be long before they give up.

Funny you should mention aftermarket shocks, as I was thinking about upgrading but I dont know where to start really. I would love a pair that could maybe be adjusted to suit off road conditions and then changed to suit road. That would be sweeeeet!!
I'll see what my local dealer can get hold of, there is no rush as the MOT isnt till july and it might even last till then.

Also Nitro Warrior, I forgot to answer your question in the first post. I havent fitted the y10 anti roll bar yet. I am waiting for it to be taken off the road for restoration again. Soon I hope, as its getting very very tatty

Thanks for all your thoughts,

Si

Inspired by your post i'm searching the internet for suitable shocks. Not found much yet, but did find this.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/-Rear-Adjustable-Shock-Absorbers--30cm-to--48cm_W0QQitemZ220343314656QQcmdZViewItem

I reckon they would be fine, adjustable and £43.50 for the pair including postage. Tempted to get them myself!

edit: After finding those ebay shocks I was searching for 'red max shocks' and found this!! I'll take a pair of them too!! :D
I can just see the email..
"interested in the red max shock absorber, do you have a Panda fitment?"
...""
