My other half wants a Multipla and so we are off in search of her dream car.

We will be looking at a post 2001 ELX JTD.

Before we go, I have a couple of questions to hopefully avoid a nightmare.

On the pre facelift model some seem to have the mark stamped into the tailgate while others are smooth. Is there a date from which they packed it in, or are the smooth ones just modified?

I’m not into all this low ash oil, passive / active rejen / ash cleaning hype. Do they all have DPFs? Or is there a date up to which there is non to worry about.

Which technology is employed? IE is it passive only, or flame thrower in the zorst to raise the temp for active rejen Ahhhh?

Do Fiat recommend the use of low ash lub oil? If so I’m guessing most non main dealer garages would just poor in regular oil and get that DPF all clogged.

How is the Soot level measured? is it an ECU map that decides it's rejen time as we run for xxx hours or is it actively monitored?

Many thanks but come on Stu, you should be a particulate nox reduction expert and know the inns and outs of FIAT's offerings. you need to know these things if you have the keys to FF :p

:p I take it there is no blue (ether) tank on these Multiplas

This will be my first experience of owning a diesel

My advice would be the newer the better. I know all the bug owners out probably want to kill me but you can get a nosejob multi for around 4000 pounds.

if i had seen this add yesterday i let my 2001 110 sx with 60 thousand go for 900 quid toa owner that didnt care about it still now after another one as well as they are good fun and ugly let me no what u get :)

as they are good fun

are they fun though? as in fun to drive?
Only ive given up the search already (after 2 years or so of wanting one) The few i viewed have been a little battered/well used, my budget could be the problem, as there only seems high mileage ones about, in fact theres not many about for sale at all atm:bang:

Stick to a pre-facelift and I think you avoid the DPFs - certainly my 2003 has no DPF, yay.. so there's no additives, filter regenerating etc.

My 2003 has the MULTIPLA lettering on the back (I think that's what you meant?)

And yes, Fun:
* the ridiculously wide track and comparatively low weight (compared to an espace or whatever) means you really don't have to slow down as much as other people think for corners.
* The 115bhp diesel has enough torque to make the thing feel nippy
* The high seating position, good visibility and obviously 3 up front seating combines all the above with the same entertainment you only get in a rented Transit van..
* If you have kids, the flat floored, big windowed, fisher-price coloured (albeit flimsy) interior will get treated like crap but is so much less confining than a regular hatchback..

But budget for £150 a year to fix the handbrake (if you get a 2003 one with rear discs) and apparently regular suspension bushes..

I think you should get one..

Hi Emm

They are lots of fun to drive, mine just gone through her MOT, see MOT Time Again for details, she's done 117k miles and still has plenty of fire (for a 1.6 petrol) so I wouldn't worry about high mileage, especially if you get a diesel, we replaced a Skoda Octavia (sorry folks can I say that here?) with my current bug and she'd done a quarter of a million miles when we parted company

Keep looking, one will turn up

There are plenty for sale around, don't give up looking, you'll may regret it lol

yes keep looking you will love it! I was a little unsure when Paula said she wanted to get rid of our punto and get a multipla but its fantastic its got 160,000 on the clock now but never uses any oil and runs mint. I do agree there are alot of rough ones out there but I think thats because of what they are transport for kids.
