i know theres loads of threads on this in the doblo section but has this ever happened to the stilo ? ive alos posted this in the doblo section....

im now having this problem only my stilo is undriveable i stalled it today and now it wont go over 20mp there was no engine light on at all i had a quick look at the maf and the and disconnected the egr tried to drive and still the same plugged the egr back in and now its saying engine fault and the engine light is staying on....... anyone any ideas as im pissed right off having no car and looking like its gonna cost hundreds

I presume you have a JTD as you mention MAF sensor.

Disconnect the MAF sensor rather than the EGR (no faults will be generated)

Also read the MAF sensor thread.

Hi mate,

The "engine fault" will have been caused by disconnecting the EGR. Disconnecting the EGR wont help you.
As Argonought said above, you want to disconnect the MAF sensor. Also have a look at this GUIDE. Its for a punto JTD but will be almost identical on your stilo.

i disconnected the maf sensor first and drove it and it was still the same i reconnected it and then done the egr still the same...... i actually took the whole maf unit off and when i put that back on thats when i got the engine light coming on could i have triggered something if the boost solinoid or something like that got moved as the maf sensor and the boost solinoid are around the same location ? ... .btw i know nothing about these things was just trying to follow instructions off here :(

Hi mate,

Disconnecting the MAF wont cause any "engine failure" message. The point you make about the boost solenoid is a good one. I take it its still in its original location on the gearbox next to the MAF? In which case, it may well have got wet. Most people, (even some dealers) move the boost solenoid up onto the battery tray to try and keep it dry. May be worth disconnecting it and drying it out with a hair-dryer if its wet.
Another thing that may be worth checking, is if the EGR valve is stuck open. You can do this easily by undoing the 4 allen bolts that connect the metal pipe from the EGR to the inlet manifold. Once its removed, you should be able to see the piston in the middle of the EGR. It should be flush against the housing when the engine is off.

should it not have went out once it was reconnected ?

It should go out after 3 complete drive cycles where the fault is no longer there (eg with the EGR reconnected) A drive cycle is from cold, up to temp, and then from cold again 3 times.
Fiat diagnostics would be able to do it their and then, and probably give you a more precise indication of what was causing the power loss in the first place.

ok mate thanks for the info i was trying to avoid fiat but maybe looks like im gonna have to get them to look at it rather than a back street garage. im sure they will tell me what it is for a small fee ? and then mayne i could get someone to do the work a bit cheaper once i know what is causing it ?

just started the car from cold there and within seconds from starting it that silver piece of pipe leading to the EGR was warm but touchable so im guessing the problem is more than likely the EGR im letting the car tick over to try and get this engine light off it wont damage it would it by letting it tick over ? ?

just a quick report back...... i tried to take the car to my mates this morning to check the EGR and the car wouldnt start at all.. decided to tow it into the garage, on the way there i tried to jump start it, it started first time of trying so just towed it in anyway and i mentioned the EGR to the mechanic anyway i left it with him caled back up at two oclock and it was fixed :D he said the EGR was stuck open and he cleaned it all out (dont know if he did or not) he said it was reading 3 errors (1) ERG (2) MAF AND (3) CYLINDER no4 not firing right !! he said he cleared the faults charged me £50 car seems to be flying im a happy chappy (for now) so i'll see how it goes in the coming weeks. im only hoping if it was what he said it was that he didnt block it off  im not going to take it apart to check so i'll take his word for it lol.

thanks guys for all the advice
