I have an M reg Punto Selecta.
It has been standing for a couple of weeks and now will not select any gears.
It is as if it is constantly in neutral even though I slide it through the selectors. It drove into position without any problems and in everyway seems normal except for no gears.
Any suggestions. ?

It is the ECVT Selecta. (auto)

Can you put it into gears without usein the clutch john..? If so could be that your popped the gear connector so when you move the gearstick its not actually connected to the gearbox also have you checked the linkage on top of gearbox to see if it has come unattached is the brake fluid level ok..?

I presume the engine starts as normal but you dont get any drive to the wheels at all ? I had an R reg selecta. same thing happened to me. had to have it towed to my local fiat dealer. problem turned out to be a fuse had gone. I was charged 70 quid and all they did was replace a flippin fuse !!
this fuse controls the movement of the electro-magnetic clutch. I dont know where in the car this fuse is, but you should find out and replace it yourself and save yourself some cash. hope this helps. good luck!

Hi Yes I had presumed it was the magnetic fuse, but so far I have not been able to locate it.
Anyone else with that knowledge ?

There is a fuse in the engine compartment for the auto. transmission. it is situated on the left side of the bulkhead under a plastic cover, which houses the map sensor and the plug connector from the lambda sensor, the cover is held on with two screws. There are two fuses the auto trans, one is the 15 amp fuse. If the fuse is ok try the condition of the electro magnetic clutch brushes, they could be sticking or may be worn too far down beyond thre wear limit indicator marks on them and not giving enough pressure to make good contact. You have to remove the battery tray in order to get at them. A 10 mm socket will remove the two screws from the plate that holds the brush carrier assembly in place, just in line with the gearbox dipstick. When removed, if they are not worn make sure they move smoothly in their holders. Failing this there are also two micro switches for the auto trans on the throttle pedal which have to be adjusted correctly, since your fault has developed whilst lying idle, it could be that the ball type switch at the pedal has jammed, it should be heard to clik when the pedal is pressed and again when the pedal is realeased. Some WD 40. sprayed on to the ball end is needed to free it off. Hope you are up and running soon!

Thanks so much for that wonderful description. Do you work for Heynes????:)

I now know where to start to look. Very much appreciated.(y)

Hi White Tornado,
I followed your excellent instructions, but still no success. I don't know where to look next. The brushes looked new, the fuse was OK and the switch clicking. I checked the wiring and it seemed all OK.

The service manual implies this fault has been corrected before, that is probably when the brushes were replaced.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Hi T14086 and White Tornado,

Thanks for your help so far.
The two wires Blue/Red and Brown which go to the brushes seem to be dead.

The two red wires to and from the fuse are live.

The gas pedal switch seems free and I presume functioning
(on the left bracket) It has an adjuster on it but I presume it is correctly adjusted as it was working OK before.

The kick down switch clicks as if working.

Any more signposts from you greatly appreciated.

John.

surely you can just buy a better car for that much? or even a complete selecta gearbox with fitting for much less money.
