Seicento Seicento Sporting MS in faded red :)

Introduction

Seicento Sporting Michael Schumacher in faded red :)

Just picked up one of these for a 70 mile a day commute and so far, great fun.

It's a 2001 Y reg, 80k miles, full service history, new rad, alternator, battery, handbrake cables, clutch and clutch cable and exhaust were done by the previous owner.

So far ( 20 miles in ) i've fixed the following ...

Seized cooling fan and a blown fuse, WD40 on fan bearings and a new fuse fixed that.

Leaking sunroof - removed all the bolts and siliconed up the rubber washers, new gaskets made from bike inner tube and silicon greased the seal. No more leaks.

Things i might fix ...

Both fog lights are not working, one definitely due to water through a cracked lens and the other .... probably got bored years ago.

Clunking from the steering, presume / assume it's either track rod ends or balljoints / arb bushes.

Paint - it's a faded sorry state, good enough condition, just looks like FIAT forgot to put suntan lotion in the original paint :)

The only thing i'm stuck with now are what tyres to get, have seen you can get Pirelli P6000 175 50 R15 or 165 60 R14 in more choices, am inclined to go for the higher profile as it's cheaper and will probably dent the mpg less. I take it there are no issues with using a 165 60 R14 tyre on that wheel? Miata tyre calculator reckons it's within tolerance

175/50-14 3.4in 10.4in 20.9in 65.6in 965 0.0%
165/60-14 3.9in 10.9in 21.8in 68.5in 925 4.3%

Bit more searching reckons 185 50 R14 will fit - Maxxis do their MA Z1 in that size and that'll do fine. Will get 4 of those ordered and fitted next month - i'll play with what's left of the P6000s for now
I'm aware this won't sharpen the handling but that's fine.

Since everyone on forums likes pics, here's a few of it, nicknamed it 'Shooey' which seems entirely apt. Outside is faded in many places, once i get some time i'll buzz the DA over it and give it a few coats of decent wax but i suspect the paint has faded beyond help. It is utterly manky inside but now the leaking roof is fixed ( and its no longer carrying a dog around) i'll get in there with an aquavac and make it a lot nicer :)

40 miles of mixed roads .... I'd say it drank half that on the way there though. I topped it up at home and it was sat just in the dregs of the bottle so just in time eh :)

Ordered a full gasket set, all new bolts etc, will get a coolant flush ( plus heater matrix) and new oil and filter and a water pump and belt change - don't think anything else needs doing. This does explain the slight hesitation when trying to maintain 70mph on the motorway, i suspect this has been an underlying issue since day one!

Needs a new gasket, a skim, new radiator ( one one was leaking) and a couple of new rubber pipes etc.

Looking pretty sorry for itself with half an engine in the bay but it's clearly not had an oil change in a while and there was a lot of residue on top of the pistons.

Should get it back mid next week so for now ... i've been forced to being the other car out to play :D

I'll cope .... i think :D

Apparently I get it back tonight ...

Water pump and belt fitted and a new radiator and cooling fan ( last one had blown and the fan was a little stiff )and a couple of the rubber water hoses had perished so they've also been replaced.

I've also ordered a Bi-Xenon HID kit and yes, i am well aware it's not legal :D But after trying Silverstars that replaced the 100W Rally bulbs the previous owner fitted .... it's more dangerous to drive around not being able to see at more than 40mph.

So hopefully, fingers crossed - that's it for a bit!!!

Meh - still not got it back ... waiting for some part from FIAT. Apparently there's some plastic pipe thing that bolts into the back of the block that links into the breather system, it cracked when it was removed ( probably due to age and heat) and it's a FIAT only part to replace.

I'm starting to miss the thing

And it's back ... and fixed! Haven't got the invoice yet but it's all running nicely so it will be used for work in the morning to give it a good run in ..... then at the weekend i can finish wiring in new lights and interior lights, new sidelights etc etc.

Feels great to be back in it :D

H4 BiXenon HID kit fitted - took a couple of hours with being tidy and keeping cables neat. Tried to fit LED sidelights but the hole is way too small to get a CREE LED unit in so i've had to order something a little slimmer.

Also changed the courtesy light and the rear number plate lights.

Need to go out for a drive later and see if the HID are any better than the halogens that they replaced.

Right ... this HID nonsense? Fitted them on Saturday and had a chance to try them out this morning in the murk and fog on the 40 mile commute to work on unlit roads.

I've tried 100/80 lamps, not bad but still woeful dipped beam. 60/55 Osram Silverstar II, not as good as the 100/80. 35W HID BiXenon - beats both of the above by a country mile.

1. Haven't been flashed by anyone.
2. Haven't had anyone cut me up by pulling out on me.
3. I can see where I'm going.
4. I can lower the lights by 2 marks on the electric adjustment and still see where i am going.

These were cheap, the kit was only about 35 quid delivered and i'm aware the ballasts may die after 6 months but i'll take the risk.

Some pictures below but i'm happy with the beam cut off, high beam is good and there's not masses of scatter.

Just need to work out the sizing as the honda is a different size screen .... but the blades don't flex and they're a lower profile than the 'fake' aero ones plus they fit on standard arms.

Yeah - thats my 'other' red car :)

What you won't love is;

145 miles to a £70 tank if you thrash it for all of it.
Highest insurance group pretty much.

However roof down motoring is good fun and tbh you'd have as much fun in an MX5 - everyone should try convertible ownership at some point :)

Been looking at this http://www.retrofitlab.com/projector-kits/bi-xenon-mini-h1-twin-kit-1.html as a potential thing to play with fitting, makes things much easier than farting about with P38 and sandpaper!!

700 miles done now since the head gasket and all is well. HID make a massive difference and contrary to popular belief, i've yet to be flashed for using them.

Far as i'm concerned, as they're capped and not shining directly through the lens, all i'm doing is sending better quality light from the reflector through the lens to the road - it can only reflect to the same position as the halogen lamps.

Up to anyone else whether they fit them or not but i won't be taking mine out.

Maxxis tyres are cracking things on this it seems, slightly odd size but 40% cheaper than those horrid Pirells. Wet or dry, cold or warm, they work well and haven't hit the arches or any of the bodywork.

Next thing is definitely bushes and suspension.

just not being flashed doesn't mean you ain't dazzling people. I regularly get almost blinded by people with silly bright lights but i don't flash them. What would be the point of blinding someone going the other way when i'm blinded myself... That will possible result in the hugest crash for no reason at all couldn't it. You clearly don't care though so lets move on now.

I'm still intending on getting them tyres for my sei, keep us posted how they go, how long they last etc. And 185/50r14 is the best size for the wheels, i have always run on that size for years and years ;)

lol I have had the alignment checked with the MOT tool and they're spot on so it's fair to say i'm less than concerned. TBH if i was just farting around town at < 40mph i'd not have bothered but 80+ miles a day in the dark on unlit and sometimes unmarked roads is just taking too much of a risk.

Perhaps the wrong car for the job but hey ho, too late now.

I'm about 2000 miles in so far on the tyres, it's the bushes and suspension that is letting the car down at the moment - both front wishbone bushes are shot and i've play / clunking from the balljoints / track rods so that's going to get done.

What i still LOVE about the car is the lack of weight through corners and the sheer chuckability of the thing. It's not the most accurate tool but it teaches bigger heavier cars a lesson in weight distrubution and mass versus grip :)

Meh @ rocker cover gasket .... royal arse of a fiddle to get all the bits and bobs unclipped and unbolted never mind getting the gasket to sit right. Garage seem to have bolted the rocker cover down way too tight to try and stop a leak caused by re-using an old gasket - feckers.

That said, an hour and it's back together and a few forays into 4k+ rpm haven't shown a leak. Must have been half the dipsticks worth disappeared down the front and back of the engine over the last week. On the plus side, whatever it coated isn't going to rust an time soon. Also changed the little 3 connection rubber pipe that connects the breather from the rocker to the air box and the vac line.

Thanks to the chap who wrote the little how to - there's now 4 small pea sized bits of RTV in the correct place :)
