My friend has an old SEAT, 1.4 I think, and it drives fine apart from when you ease of the throttle, i t makes an awful screech/squeal!!!

It's only when in gear and not when under acceleration.

A garage has said its the box, and offered to fit if he can source a box.

He has found one for £250 from a breakers, fitting about £100!

Is this a typical sympton of a failed box? Any ideas?

I couldn't find a haynes, so couldn't do a good check of stuff.

Cheers for any help!

Get onto www . seatcupra . net/forums

I have been a member for years (nice bunch)

They will help you.

since its only happening during decelleration it suggests a worn/loose gearbox or engine mount to me.

£250 for a gearbox is crazy, at a scrapyard it will be £50-100 removed from the car ready to collect with 30days warranty.

unless the car is less than 4yrs old.

anything more than 4yrs (by the sounds of it a 90's ibiza?) usually costs nought for the g'box as they are usually almost dead anyways.

fitting no more than £100, get clutch changed an all.

I put my money on a bad clutch release bearing/clutch fork, or maybe a strange worn engine/g'box mount.

Sorry but a totally crap statement, give me evidence of every single UK 90's seat g/box failing and maybe ill believe this

Well, he bought the box anyway in the end, for £250. I told him he should be paying a lot less, even showed him one on ebay for 99.

It is an old ibiza ;)

Not sure when he's having it fitted, but I will suggest he has the clutch done at the same time.

Cheers for your help everyone.
