On the horns of a dilemma

By scrapping the ‘96 barchetta and using Fiat’s Scrappage Offer I can get a 1.4 Punto for £6695, a savings of nearly £3k from the full list price

But I can get a good discount for a Punto thru the Fiat club (say 25% off) and sell the barchetta privately

So what would the old barchetta get on the market? Even for scrap/salvage? Or would I be stuck with it?

What would you do?

Well, surely it has to be worth 3 grand. Its best not to take another Barchetta off the road. I have to admit, I do not understand scrapping cars unless they really are scrap - it can't be environmentally friendly. The thing with the B is that its not just like scrapping just any family runabout.

I am sure everyone knows mine is for sale at the moment. I looked into exactly the same thing when I was deciding what to do with the car. Anyway, I can tell you, the deals with the dealers are there to be had, mention scrappage allowance and those deals suddenly are not on offer. In my case I have not owned the fiat for a year so would not have qualified anyway. I got the Seat for £13200 when it had a list price of £16500 which is a good discount I think but it was pre-registered. Pre reg cars dont qualify for the scrappage allowance, go for a pre reg, sell the fiat privately and forget scrapping it would be my advice!

I agree with Doc brand new cars are a massive waste of money. You lose a fortune when you drive off the forecourt and then wind up with half the car you could've had spending the same money on a second hand one.

There's an '87 Bentley Turbo R with 88k on the clock going for £6,650 on Auto Trader. Brand new Punto 1.4 pah Live a little:slayer:

Why scrap a barch? 'Cos its 13 years old and everything will need replacement soon. And Fiat's charges for hood rubbers etc really do p*ss me off!

Doc; good looking b's seem to go for about the £1k on e-bay.

Mat I have just sold a 2300 s coupe after 36 years of ownership. Keeping real old'uns on the road is fun but can be very expensive at times

Depreciation

Having read the "Scrapping Dilemma" thread, I considered the cars I have Had i the past. I bought one of the first V8 Landrover Discoveries.. it was beautiful to drive but began to fall to pieces (actuall, quite large pieces). I lost £16,000 in four years and then I calculated I had put over 6,000 gallons of fuel in it. I traded the disco for a Volvo V70 2.5 TDI This was a superb car to drive, fast, very economic and ultra reliable. I lost £23000 when I sold it after almost 5 years with 140,000 miles on the clock. I could go on and on but the bottom line is, I have been "losing " about £100 a week in depreciation for years. My Barchetta cost less than the annual depreciation loss on my current VW Golf TD. If it only lasts for twelve months, it will be the best investment I have ever made.
