await the full details but it looks like I should be in line for the £2000. The heart really fancies the 100hp but the head says a Dynamic with lots more mpg, £35 ved, and if speed limits are going to be 50 and 20 who needs the 100hp. Fiancee has a Dynamic so I know exactly what that's like, is the ride better/quieter in the 100hp, the seats look better, are carpets and headlining the same? I drive like an old woman (other stereotypes are available) is it possible to drive a 100hp in a sedate manner. I have to date lived a very sensible life but this is my mid life crisis period (I bought the electric guitar last month). Is the 100hp worth the extra (if dealers don't up the prices) £1700 or so.

If your self description is accurate, stick with the 1.2 The 100hp ride is firmer, is thirstier and has more tyre noise. Its great fun, but only if you push on hard or use bendy roads with no traffic. The 1.2 will still be fun, and offer quite a saving over the next few years.

I have also done the electric guitar phase. Its a bitch to keep dusting. :bang:

It is possible to drive any car sedately. The question, which spec/looks do you prefer and do you like to have a bit of fun now and then. 100HPs are fun, but so are 1.2s.

As for this scrappage offer: £300M at £2,000 per car = 150,000 cars (of course it will be less if the government need to set up a new department to manage it). 150,000 is not that many. Plus most people driving £500 snotters do so because they either don't want to afford, or cannot afford a new car. You lose the VAT when you drive a new car out of the showroom, which equates to more than £2,000 in many cases.

Having owned both I can say that the ride is worse but the handling is much much better. If you drive in straight bumpy lines the 100hp is not fun, if you have bends it is different class. I also find it better on motorways not just due to the extra power but as the wider tyres and track help it feel more secure. The seats are better too as my Dynamic's wore quite badly although I think the post 06 ones may have a better trim.

I can get pretty similar fuel economy from both when driven in the same way so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Take a test drive if you can and see how it suits you.

I emailed a mate about this earlier and he reckons,

The government will only contribute 1000 per sale and expect the manufacturer to contribute the other 1000. They are already doing this and more on most cars.

Also the goverments 1000 will have the trade in value of the old car subtracted.

Seems like a lot of hot air about nothing if this is the case.

Oh I laughed so much when I read that - yes the dust seems to collect under the strings between the pick ups. I think I am so much a 1.2 person especially with the fuel escalator making a comeback. I find the 1.2 more than nippy enough for me and just love driving it when I'm allowed. But the 100ho does look so much better. Like Ivantate I also wonder about the detail of the offer, the SMMT site details it is 1000 from manufacturer and so I wonder if they will offer that on all cars or just the ones they want to shift. Devil and detail as always.

I very much doubt the last bit but yes it does appear to be 50% the manufacturer and 50% the government.

All going well I'm going to take delivery or some kind of Panda or possibly a 500 when I trade my 406 in :)

Have a drive of a 100hp and see if you can live with the ride. The 100hp has the looks and plenty of standard kit, in my opinion it's fabulous.

You can get 45mpg if you don't drive hard, too.

The question really boils down to what sort of music you're playing on that guitar - if it's Bert Wheedon (I'm probably the only member who remembers him - he was bloody terrible) or The Shadows (REALLY terrible) I should think a 1.1 will do you. If it's something a bit more interesting - I'd favour blues but that a personal preference - it's the 100HP.

Has to be the blues, I'm up to the 12/8 groove and syncopated strumming in Blues for Dummies.
Having watched BBC 24 I get the impression that as manufacturers are paying a grand they get to decide what models they'll give the money on - Toyota have come out and said which model they'l do it on. So my money isn't on Fiat doing it on the Panda, surely they'll do it on models that provide a bigger margin. Shame, I would have been down the dealer tomorrow and I still hanker after the 100hp, looks great and the price difference now doesn't seem that great compared to the difference in spec. and I've only ever seem one - they are pretty exclusive.

Looks like heart is slowly winning battle over head, he he he. Perhaps a 1.2 500 SPORT would be a win-win compromise - good looks, more inspiring to drive and own than a dynamic, better interior resale and better fuel economy and lower tax. Guitar won't fit in the boot though....

Hi,
(First post here after lurking for a week or two)
I was also looking (hoping!) to take advantage of the scrappage scheme. I thought the manufacturers could only opt in or out and if they opt in then all models had to have the £2000 offer. The trouble is I can't see the same discounts being offered on the Panda and the £2000.

I'm biased as I had a dynamic but the 100hp looks more fun to drive and has more power and is slightly better looking in my opinion ;)

Yeah I suspect the same. I think discounted Panda prices will rise. Which is why I think I'll be getting a 500.

I was in this same position about a year ago - 100hp or Mjet in my case.

Went with the head (Mjet) in the end......kept it 6 months and swapped it for the heart.

The Mjet was great don't get me wrong, but I MUCH prefer the 100hp.

I drive mine pretty sedately and I'm easily averaging 40+ over a tank.

Good luck (y)

I really like the 100hp, head ruled the heart for me and i ended up with my second 1.2.
I refused to test drive the 100hp, because i knew that would be it.
Maybe next time.
