We have a 2008 x250, can anyone recommend a scan tool for general diagnosis and body control faults?
Recently we had dipped beam keep going off but require a scanner for all diagnosis, tried an artidiag and it was asking to purchase a gateway I think
Many thanks

If yours is a 2008 then I doubt a "gateway" is an issue. :-

** Important - 2018+ model year coverage **

Please note - many Fiat group vehicles from the 2018 model year onwards (sold since mid-2017) , have a "Security GateWay" Module (SGW) fitted. The SGW module limits diagnostic communication to read-only access, unless the tool can obtain a session-specific access code from Fiat group's servers (which requires an expensive subscription).
However if you go on this Gendan site they offer a variety of Fiat specific scanners, you will need to decide how much you wish to spend.;)

For Fiat

Hi, Welcome to the forum
.
For Fiat vehicles in general Multiecuscan is most frequently recommended, as it speaks "fluent Fiat". It is software that runs under a Windows computer operating system. Adapter cables are also required. Gendan who have already been suggested by @bugsymike , receive positive feedback, as in providing advice on what to purchase.

It is possible that your BCM has developed a fault. There have been recommendations on forum for BCM cloning services in recent months. If required. it may be possible to find these by using the search function.

I recently read a mention by member @the green vanper , that he had seen reports of water getting into cable forms and tracking into the BCM. Something that would not be expected. May I add that the x250 model is notorious for water ingress under the bonnet. Again the search function may help.

Best is cheap ELM327 v1.5 or v2.2+ with MES or AlfaOBD. Check MES site for adapters needed.
Cheap ELM is not best. Might not even work on FIAT!

I'm using a STN1170 bluetooth dongle (newer version is STN2120) and it connects to all modules with no issues. Airbag, dashboard included. I could even code the extra keyfob (immo+central locking) with it. Of course on MES.

Well to be more specific: some cheap ELM327 like said without 120 ohm resistor in CAN 6-14 (easy to desolder) or cheap ELM327 ready for Fiat (no resistor there). It's from 5€ + 3€ each adapter if needed or not. Ridiculous price vs STN based emulating ELM327 (Vgate, OBDLink etc). It works the same by 1/5 price.

What year is your van? Does it have SGW?

See post #1. 2008, so no SGW or Security Gate Way. For explanation, SGW restricts access.
I´m asking the green vanper to find out if his solution works because he doesn´t have a SGW. If he does have a SGW then his dongle is good also for others with SGW.

Nope, no SGW, 2011/2012.

This isn't a solution that won't work out of the box, so majority of the users won't be able to use it.

Then, this information should be mentionned in the 1st post you mentionned a cheap OBD will work :p
