Ok that should eliminate the fuel. Get a can of brake or carb cleaner and spray it around the carb mounting and see if there is a change. If ther is you have an induction leak if not it isn’t . Also if you pull the choke does it get better or worse ? If it’s better you have dirt in the carb check the jets.

Thank you "FR85" for those few kind words---I do occasionally drop a bollock, which people are quick to (quite correctly) point out to me. I try and do my homework prior to putting something down "on paper", especially if "those words" are going to be taken as "what to do" advice
