Panda (Classic)  Roofus

Introduction

OK so my new arrival has now been christened Roofus by the family so I thought he'd better get his own Members motors thread since I've done some stuff today.
So, for the sake of the new thread here's the story so far......
Once upon a time, at a show long ago (well, last year) a mysterious Panda showed up and joined our special line up by the toilets. So obviously I decided to do hot dogs in front of it:cool:

It was owned by a nice couple who had originally owned it new, then bought it back a year or so before this pic was taken when they spotted it looking sorry for itself on ebay, and spent a lot of time and money putting it straight. Looked good then and a year or so later I saw it again at another Thoresby show and by now they were considering selling it again. I had a look around it then and was impressed by the condition but I really wasn't looking for another car then.
Fas t forward another few months and it still wasn't sold, and I was looking:D

that was only going to end one way...

So: as I got it Really good nick: Shiny shiny exterior:cool:

Brand new wider steel wheels and tyres which I love!

Brand new twin sunnies just fitted:

Sadly slightly tired colour edition switchgear

Interior mostly good except for a chunk out of the bottom of the steering column shroud, rather weedy stereo and tatty gear gaiter and knob due to use of a big lock on them

So since I am not a big fan of the grey interior plastics anyway a better condition set of black stuff went in:

And clear indicators went on:

And that was it for the first week or so.

Next issue found was rust related, just a wee one to get me started:

So cut away the crusty bits to give me a neater hole to fill:

Look away now if you're squeamish.. repair section fabricated from an old Panda door I had around:

Cranked up the welder (I know but it's my first welded repair:eek:) As you can see I had the welder behind the door so I was reaching underneath to knock the power on. Blasted quite a few holes before I realised I'd flipped it onto a higher power setting at the same time, Doh! Think I managed to get enough metal to metal anyway.

Quick skim of filler and a coat of my own custom mix Hammerite:

That's it so far. Alternating daily driver duties with Grumbleweed at the moment anyway so at least he's getting used. Never actually used the sunroof in anger yet though.
Email back from Euro asking for a photo to confirm the part is wrong. Do you think this will do?

Nope, apparently not. Sent them a photo of the label on my initial email and they emailed back to ask for a photo of the complete part, sent them the above and they have just emailed back to say that's no good because they can't see the label..:bang: really not impressed now!

Well, their courier is coming tomorrow to pick up this here Escort bit. Panda backbox is still in stock on their system but nobody in their customer service seems terribly bothered about getting me a replacement so I've ordered one from somewhere else, as I will be doing for anything else I'm needing from now on.

Well, had a busy day today, getting dark by the time I'd done so failed dismally to get any pics again but:
New exhaust centre section and backbox fitted (sounds much less disreputable now)
replaced SPi unit with spare to see if running improves any.

And Pop quiz hotshots! Replaced these, this is how they came off the car, anybody identify the part and the (pretty major) issue?

Spot on as usual

. Yup the whole back was missing from the larger rubber, which is basically the bit that locates the rack, so there was a lot of unwanted movement going on. Not much fun, and an absolute pig to swap as they are buried at the back of the engine bay with lousy access, and a big chunk of the gear linkage attached to the brackets that didn't used to be there on the carb models

Fixed now though.

Had an annoying injection warning light for the last week or so. Fixing it using the old swap stuff till it goes away technique, manifold temp sensor didn't help, MAP sensor no joy, TPS still there. Swapped out the ECU in a fit of pique and the light's off for now. See how it goes.

Resolved the injection warning light issue. It came back after the ECU swap so I ignored it for a bit, then gave him a wash & swapped the gearknob because I couldn't be bothered doing anything more useful. That seems to have put the light out. Go figure.

it may have been caused by one of the earthing points on the engine wiring loom..
that or it has a vacuum leak somewhere.

its a shame you are not closer.. i have enough diagnostics equipment here to read pretty much every ECU fiat or not.
tracked back all the various vacuum lines when I swapped the ECU out and all seems OK. Suspicious of the earthing though, he's taken to giving me frequent little static type shocks when I touch the door on the way out.

Well, a new lambda has put out the stupid light again....for a bit. Pulls wildly to the right whenever I brake so need to sort that out.
...so put on some scary additions instead:devil: it is supposed to be a "Colour" after all.

not entirely sure just how long I'll live with them before I decide I hate them again but it's just a really nice wheel and I've never even fitted it to a car before.
