General Roll Cages

General Roll Cages

I think that the emergency services cut people out more so they don't have to risk causing damage by moving them. A couple some of us know were recently cut out of an Atom despite begging them not to do it!

Although I have my doubts about cages in road cars, this isn't one of them. With a cage and secured harness you're less likely to be damaged enough to warrant cutting out in extremis, and a set of pneumatic jaws will chop clean through a cage and A pillar in one bite.

was just my own thoughts.

I competed in oval racing between 2003 to end fo 2006, I had the option of using a full cage but used whats called a H Frame instead, it was non contact racing that i did but if you ever see banger racing have a look at what they have supporting the floor to the roof and also supporting the B posts and drivers seat, very substantial stuff and not for road cars.

want a link to somebody who makes good cages? clicky clicky

Never considered a cage myself as i need the rear seats,

but thought I'd ask the question what about a half cage rather than a full one? are these anymore road friendly? as it is mounted behind the driver it would give stiffness at the rear, roll over protection but with less accident hazard upfront?

Yes, and eh, no.

A 'half cage' is really a roll over bar and most modern cars, centos included are well protected in a roll over situation. What causes problems is the car becoming airborne and landing on the roof. The full cage will also send any frontal impact around the habaticle rather than into it, in theory. The roll over bar won't. Likewise a side impact with a cage should send the energy around the occupants, unless the impact is in one particular area (hence the sad passing of Beef Park).

Cheers

Yes they are, its fun getting into and out of bucket seats when door bars are fitted.....but without them a side impact could hurt alot more.

Its up to you and the use it'll be getting...for daily use, i wouldnt have a full cage.
