I have just had my cam belt changed by my local garage today at 62,000 miles. My Stilo is a 1.6 active on a 2002 plate. The problem I now have is the car idle is very bad the rev counter sits on 1000 then drops suddenly down to under 500 and then picks up and then drops again.

On the way home from the garage with the car running at the right temp I had to stop at traffic lights the revs dropped with the clutch in and the car stalled. Before the belt change the idle would fluctuate a little bit no where near as bad as it is now.

My garage told me they had marked the cam and locked it off and they had tested the car and it drives fine. It drives fine so long as I dont have to stop. Taking the car back first thing in the morning any advice would be very helpful as I am not very good at mechanics thanks

have a search through the section theres been quite a few recently that have had problems exactly like this after having cambelt changed

That guarantees they didn't use the correct tools so this will be yet another 1.6 engine which has incorrect timing after a cambelt change. Do a search and you'll find a whole load of 1.6 owners who have experienced the same problems of poor tickover or even engine fault light at higher rpm when the correct tools aren't used. It will need to be checked for the correct timing but using the correct tools, that means they'll be in a problem if they just used a cam locking device

I took the car back to the garage this morning, they agree its to do with the timing. When the car was cold had trouble starting and it stalled 3 times on the way to them. They said they were going to get a new tool and re do the fitting of the belt.

Thanks for your help and I will let you know when it gets sorted

:D:D:D:D I picked the car up today and its all sorted no more rough idle. The garage manager said that the original tensioner in the kit he got would not tighten up correctly. So he fitted another one and whilst doing this with it all locked in position it must have moved by a small fraction.

The car now drives real nice and the revs seem to sit alot better than before the belt change.
