I drive a 1997 Marea HLX 1.8 and even when the car is idle, at traffic lights for example, the engine can rev to over 1500. Even while driving the revs are too high for the speed and gear. It doesn't happen all the time.

I posted this problem to another site and apparently this is a common enough problem and Fiat dismiss it as an actual problem.

For one I'd imagine it doesn't do any goo for fuel consumption but I'd be mnore worried about any engine damage it may possibly cause.

Anybody out there experience something similar? Get it resolved etc?

Cheers for any input.

Great to have a Fiat site up and running btw.

I had a very similar problem with my 1.6 sx. The car would rev very high when stationary or revs would rise and fall between 700 to 1500 rpm until engine was restarted. Fiat dealers claim to not having seen this problem before and resulted in 6 visits.
The problem will not be retained in the vehicle "memory" and therefore the "mechanics" at my dealership could not diagnose the problem. But after speaking to a friend on the phone he correctly pointed out that it was the throttle position sensor. Eventually got this changed and it's been OK for last year.
My Fiat is a great car but due to very poor dealership in Cardiff I will not be getting another.

Hi!
I had the same problem with my Marea 1.8 ELX, amongst other problems I still have I cured the revving problem by removing the throttle idle valve and motor then cleaning out with carb cleaner. A little squirt of wd40 to lube the seals then it was as right as rain!

Hope this helps unless you sorted it already!

I'm just about to buy a Marea saloon 1.8elx, I have the service history etc here and one of the jobs that have been done to the car is "check for high and erattic idle speed" - seems they replaced the idle speed actuator at a cost of £106.87

maybe this helps

had something sin=milar but with the throttle hitting "flat spots" in mid revs also. cured with replacement of position sensor.
