Hi Newbie here,

I have just got myself (SATURDAY) a 1.2 brava 71,800 on the clock
and it's a 2001 "Y" plt.

I have got it booked in for cambelt change, BUT i have also noticed that sometimes when selecting reveres gear it goes in with a clunk and yet other times it's absolutly silent??
Has anyone else experianced this "clunking noise"
Do you possibly know what's causing it or am i worring about nothing
Thanks
kev.

Just had service done prior to buying, saw paperwork for air and oil filters + oil dont think anything else was done ill check.

Yup i got our S40 last June, with a FULL service before purchase..... my arse! Plugs look to be original volvo ones, look to have been doing with changing at least a yr ago. Oil filter very brittle, but think that was change, as air.

But they said they'd changed the sprarks... errm no. Garage is bust now anyway and not complaining too much as we got a cracking deal on the car.

But just shows you paperwork doesnt tell the full story.

Hey you're using my name! :D

I've experienced this a few times on my GP. Quite random, and its more of a CCCCCRANK! rather than a clunk, but I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same thing (https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/88403-reverse-grind.html)

Not exactly sure what's causing it though..

its very common and nothing to worry about. many cars do it.

Yeh I've heard it from all sorts of cars.. hmmm..

About the reverse gear thing, i dont know if anyone else has experienced this but with my bravo i find that if the car is level or the front is lower than the back like on a hill for example then it clunks going into reverse but if i park my car with the front higher than the back then reverse goes in without a sound i dont know why though? anyone else noticed this?

i wouldnt know because i always select 4th gear before reverse so it goes in gear perfect every time. tricks of the trade :)

Yep, happened quite often to my old car (Subaru Liberty), which was an auto. If the car is facing down hill and I change to R, it clanks, but never when its facing an up hill.
