Any last minute advice for replacing the first exhaust pipe (engine to catalyst)

thx

Its really easy unless your talking about the manifold , if it gets bad with the nuts just cut them off and replace with stainless and you will never have the problem again.

This one. What kind of bolts/nuts are used?

The upper set of nuts can become very stuck but if your struggling they can be cut off and removed from the lower part of the manifold.
If you dont fancy that search ebay for Irwin nut extractors as they will remove most rounded nuts with no worries , id be tempted to take the car for a little run before doing it as the heat helps the nut removal.

:bang:

Tried for 3 hours to get it loose, no luck. I'm struggling to get the 4 nuts of that attach it to the engine!! Some nuts are 13mm other 12mm? Now what??

Did you remove the plate&bracket that secures the exhaust completely (the one just under the top flange) I only removed the clamping plate not the bracket.

Yes I'm removing the downpipe (I hope). They don't use bolts on this it is just 4 studs sticking out. The nuts are the type with the washer incorporated. I had to put it together again because it was getting late, and my workshop is 20 minute drive from home. Tomorrow I will try again.

Yep they are the captive bolt type mine had been removed well 3 of them anyway, pretty sure you can knock them out once the nut is off.
Then just replace them with shiny ones:D.

how much to pay to replace the exhaust? Is the likes of kwik fit any good or should I stick to my mechanic?

The exhaust is blowing from somewhere in the middle is and the mechanic says that both silences are rattling? He quoted £180 to replace the lot

Do it yourself , exhausts are the easyest thing to do especially with so much ground clearance on the multi, try ebay for prices or CES via a google search.

Sorry to crash this slightly. My 51 plate 1.9 JTD seems to have a two part arrangement.
Front pipe with cat and back pipe with two boxes.
Do the newer Multiplas have a two section back piece? And could I change my one piece to a two piece for a newer type to save having to spend loads if only one box goes in the future (as is the case now)

Dont see why not, cars with a turbo are quite quite you could prob replace the offending box with a bit of straight section and notice no difference.
I did this on my alfa and was expecting a nice sporty sound but no real difference.

DID IT!!!!! After removing a bracket (link between the engine and the tranny, and exhaust wtf is that all about) I had more room to play!! Needed to "hack" one nut. Sorry for the slang my other car is a 1972 Corvette. After that all was easy, replace the nuts with new M8 nuts and lock washers. I have no idea how much torque I should apply. All in all costed me 180 pipe & gaskets, 8 hours working time.

see, I would rather pay 1 hours labour than spend 8 of my own hours under my car being grumpy and uncomfortable
