i have just put a new rear twin tip exhaust box on my 1.6 hlx, but it has not made a great deal of sound improvement, im just wondering if i remove the silencer box before the exhaust box to improve the sound, will this still pass an m.o.t?

if not, any other suggestions to improve the sound are welcome :)

put it through its mot first, then chop it off,
12 month later if you still have the car, clamp it back on for the mot again :)

on my 1.6 i had a straight through pipe with a free flow back box fitted and it still passed with no probs, i then fitted supersprint manifold and moved the cat to under the car and it still passes but just takes a bit longer on emitions for it all to settle for long enough. now the second sensor is in the correct place i hope it will pass straight away in 2 weeks time. so my answer would be yes as long as your engine is in good order and you still have your cat.

All the silencer does is exactly what it sounds like...silences the engine.

Removing it will not affect the emissions the car produces as this is handled by the cat...on my previous car I had a straight through stainless steel system from cat back...all it was was the cat and a back box effectively...sounded pretty sweet for a 1.3.
