Technical Remote Key not working

I have recently bought a 2006 (55 plate) punto. It has only arrived with 1 key. When you press the button on the key the red light flashes, but the remote locking doesnt work. The key works fine if you stick it in the door, and works fine to start the engine etc. Some people are telling me that the key needs re-programming and others are telling me that the problem is more severe. Can anyone help? Fiat want £50 to re-program the key - which may fix it, however, if not its a complete waste of £50!! I am going to buy a new key, if the remote one will work ill buy the cheaper (£90) blade key, and if the key is knackard ill buy the more expensive (£130) remote key.

If you buy a new complete key you'll need that programming into your car.

As for your key the remote function may need reprogramming. Look in your manual to make sure there isn't a procedure to redo this yourself, else probably a trip to fiat.
