Just thinking maybe that i might have the engine either remanufactored or a exchange unit dropped in as my summer job will involve quite a lot of mileage and i am thinking better the devil i know and all that.

So has anyone ever had one rebuilt or exchanged and the likely cost of such a task. Have seen one site which has quoted £1300 for a exchange engine or i could get one from ebay but u really dont know how said engine has been treated.

Any ideas who rebuilds engines or other places to try for exchange units.

It's a very widely used engine, should be possible to pick up a low mileage one from a reputable breaker I imagine? The tricky bit would be interlocking to the on-board computer gubbins, if the donor was a Vectra for example.

Well apart from using at least 1.5 litres of oil a week nothing. Still go's like stink, fuel comsumption is still around 40mpg but its just developed a taste for oil.
Its come on all of a sudden about 3 weeks ago and as im now not in a position to replace it im thinking sticking a new engine in and keeping it for a couple of years more than i had intended.
Oil was changed about 10,000 miles ago so wouldnt hurt to change the filter and bung in fresh oil so will do that next weekend.

Have you had the engine checked to ensure that the cause of the extra oil consumption is not something like a blocked breather or knackered turbo? Is it definitely the engine that is causing the issue?

Nope not had it checked over yet, it doesnt seem to be burning oil at mo so will see what happens over the next couple of weeks. Might be the oil filter is blocked?? who knows!!!

Well my poor long suffering Jtd engine has finally called it a day (nearly) its now tapping and almost a banging and extreme lack of power and lots of blue smoke. Oh and not forgetting running on 3 cylinders by the sounds of it.:eek:

I felt so sorry for it when i was nursing her home tonight, almost wispering sweet nothings to her to get me home which she did:worship::worship: so will phone garage in morning and see what they say.

Only 128,000. But to be fair it has been hammered 98% of the time and not serviced all that often.
Will hopefully get it reconditioned as there is a place in bridgwater that does it, will phone them in the morning to see what they charge.

Finally got round to taking the lappy over to the chap thats doing my car and turns out the crankshaft sensor has thrown a fault, Symptoms being rough running, running it seems on 3 cyl's, shuddering, blue smoke etc.

So my next question is which one is the right one on shop4parts as there showing 2.
One has a lead attached and the other doesnt and im guessing the one thats says 2003-on is the one i want but before i order it would anyone be able to please confirm which one it is.

Many thanks.

Put the new crankshaft sensor in and nothing different. It seems to be firing only on 3 cyl's and no power what so ever.

If the injectors were playing up would it throw fault codes up. So at loss to know where to start.
Would a headgasket cause misfiring and loss of power, i am guessing so cos it really does sound rough.
Any other ideas and we are nearly stumped!!!!

When i cleared the fault codes.

I had the boost fault, Crankshaft sensor, The air con pressure switch and the brake light switch. Oh and a overspeed warning!!!

White / light grey/ blue smoke is oil smoke. I suggest it has spun a bearing, dropped a valve or piston ring has broken up.

Black smoke is diesel. The usual sign of injectors is a light chattering noise when under acceleration and black smoke and probably no fault codes, but car will still be driveable.

I would get a compression test done. Your engine has serious mechanical problem. Tinkering with sensors and fault codes will not fix it. You are probably getting the crank shaft sensor fault because the rotation of the engine is so uneven the computer thinks the sensor is faulty.

Well the garage thinks its knackered.

They seem to think the turbo has broken up and bits have been digested by the engine. THINK!!!!!!!

So will be going to get said car saterday and pulling said turbo off and having a look see. Which still drives so they say!!
I was begining to think the actuator for the turbo was playing up with these boost issues i was having but perhaps the variable turbo bit was breaking up instead.

Might just buy a turbo and see what happens.
