Whirring noise, oh boy oh boy ive heard that one before, i had that on old engine did an oil change with filter and that solved it :)

Not saying thats your issue but mine did similar thing and was a knackered filter.

really!

wouldnt have thought an oil filter can make a noise, as didnt think it does anything moving wise

Hi mate,

if your whirring noise is definitely related to temperature, then id sugest its more likely to be water pump than oil pump. It could be the reason your thermostat was removed in the first place, as the thermostat will put more strain on the pump.

Is the noise coming from the left hand cambelt side of the engine?

Not sure, will pay closer attention. car drives a lot better with a (new) stat in though

I suggest popping the bonnet, start the car from cold and stand there listening where the noise is coming from, try not get close to any parts especially the exhaust manifold that gets hot very quick so be careful!

When I was looking for my whiring noise I listened everywhere, as it bugged me cause the noise was dead on center of the block...I took a hard think and thought well something isn't getting lubricated correctly, so I took the plunge and did oil and filter change and it was fine after that. :)

The key to diagnosing a car is to start from the basics and work your way up the from basic to the big things like tappets, headgasket etc etc etc.

Rightly, as fingers says the stats doesn't do any movement apart from the inner piston that comes outwards at certain temperature then goes back in when temperature has dropped, so your problem is elsewhere, I'd suspect possibly water pump bearing failure, possibly the drive-belt on the alternator maybe fubar, but that's me guessing, without hearing the noise or other people hearing it, it's a full on guessing game.
