What benefit,if any, would my car get if i put some in my bog standard 1.9TD Brava?
Do cars really need it? or is it just an old wives tale?

Diesel cars especially benefit from fuel system treatment - but not that redex shite. Redex is ok if you use it to keep the system clean but it wont clean the system.
Find a local garage that will sell you a product called Forte Diesel Fuel Conditioner. Dont be surprised at the price, it can be as much as £15 but it WORKS! We have used it on really smoky cars and after a treatment with this - no smoke at all and the car is a lot more responsive.
I wont sell you any as I can't post it!

It's mostly placebo effect but...

It depends greatly on what particular kind you have in mind. There are different types of cleaners, boosters, antigels and so on.
(Octane boosters just could not work because you'll have to put 5-10 liters of the stuff to the 50 liter fuel tank to get boost of 3-5 octane points)
I've used Redex fuel system cleaner for petrol engines (small white bottle with long neck) several times. I think that there was some improvement in engine performance (even idling and better work of cold engine). Also there was some improvement in fuel consumption.
But it's all for petrol engine. Have no info on Redex for diesel.

Redex was designed as an upper cylinder lubricant, to mix with petrol and lubricate the bores and valve guides. A diesel engine does not need it as the fuel is a lubricant.

Re: Re: Redex

Slightly off topic but we must have all done it in our younger years.

'My fuel system is really dirty so I'll pop a little more than it says in to my carb, lol.'

Smoke the street out! :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Redex

Redex was developed YEARS ago and has not really changed much. Waste-o-time really as the fuels have progressed sooo much.

Glad to hear the JTD is running as it should - my Punto is superb as ever and the Alfa..... well lets just see when I get it back in one peice shall we!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Redex

In response to the Forte stuff, we sell that at the garage and it passes many a diesel on a retest that fail the emissions test.

Also, the Forte air intake cleaner spray works quite well for Twin Spark Alfas when the throttle bodies get clogged up.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Redex

I used that forte stuff on my old diesel astra when it failed it emmisions test.

Passed after using the treatment
