Hi
I bought my 2004 Multipla 1.9JTD partly on the comment that they were good for towing. I am aware that the limits set for the petrol version are lower so this can't just be based on the Fiat Multipla chassis or the towbar. Could the figure be higher for a 1.9JTD with a remap? Is the limit figure a requirement?
I am looking for a good post 2001 5-berth (or even 6)caravan that the Multipla can tow but am finding the 1300 kg limit a bit restrictive. It is also a nightmare with so many manufacturers and models out there trying to find just a list of possible vans much less locate a bargain! Has anyone done the homework or have access to a list giving this information or have a young caravan they want to give a good home? I have looked on the Caravan Club site but there isn't any advice other than a list of UK manufacturers - I have emailed asking them to list their suitable vans back to 2001. Anyone got any recommendations?

The figure 1300Kg is set based on the chassis and weight of the car. The JTD weighs more so that's why it has a higher towing weight. A remap won't increase your allowed tow weight. Towball shouldn't be an issue as they are usually limited by noseweight which you will be wanting to keep to around 40ish Kg.

A main word of warning of twin axle trailers/caravans is if you lose a rear tyre on the trailer you could lose all your noseweight - making the trailer very difficult to control - possibly more so than if you lost a tyre on a single axle.

And yes I've been in a car when a wheel came off a single axle trailer. Stopped the trailer safely but the guy down the road on his bicycle stopped to have a look what the noise was and the wheel rolled into his bike! Curiosity and the cat....

Hi there we tow with our multi the max you can tow is 1300kg, our caravan is an adria 502uk other 5/6 berths around this wieght are Bailey rangers, Avondale darts and luner zeniths.

DO NOT try towing a twin wheeler as they are all way to heavy for the multi, as for noseweight 70kg is the limit not 40 as stated before, we have towed 1300kg with 70kg on the nose for six years with no mishaps ( unless you count replacement gearboxs clutch and lots of suspension repairs mishaps LOL:eek::bang:

Happy hunting im sure you will love it once you find your ideal caravan :D

This max weight of 1300kg. Should I assume you have to take into account luggage and passenger weight? or could I have my multipla loaded with kids and luggage and still pull a 1300Kg caravan?

Hi
The 1300kg is in addition to the Multi's load subject only to your not exceeding the 'train weight' for the combined car and van. Unlikely unless the family are all obese and take too much on holiday. You can put an awning in a box on the roof to keep the mass of the caravan down below 1300kg
