Not for me, you may remember i said i would never put another 'Car' thread on FF.

For my dad.

The Audi is getting a bit tired, 160k (just ran in for a tdi audi IMO!)

Basically, He's after an Automatic, Diesel. such as BMW, budget up to £15k at the most.. but he's looked at BMWs as cheap as £6k.. Well i say 'Cheap' lol.

He's interested in the Jag X-types but he heard the diesel engines aren't up to much:confused:

he also looked at a bmw 523 LPG Conversion, but it was Y Reg, with 150k miles.

so yeh anything decent with up to about 70-80k miles, automatic, cheap-ish to run.

thanks a lot everyone!

Jag x type diesel is just the 2.0 tdci ford unit, pretty bullet proof, even on here it gets a good mention :)

Not going to recommend a car here as exec autos arent my thing but make sure autobox is in very good condition etc, smooth changes, not notchy, it could be the signs of a potential expensive repair, especially on the vehicles you are looking at.

right that's good to know about the engine, i really like the Jags, will make sure the box is working properly, as you can imagine he's had some bother with autos over the years, it's all he drives apart from the punto and escort.

needs some sense knocked into him lol, saying that, i secretly like autos

cheers for the advice, i'm off to tell him about the engines now

one of the nicest ive driven is the Volvo S60 D5, really smooth engine and loads of grunt, ride and handle well too, there is a reason the Cops use them!

failing that, what about a Passat V6 TDi 4Motion? Although your dad may not want to step backwards as it were, its a very nice car to drive.

Also, if he is interested in the Jag, the later 2.2 engine is much much nicer, and not to put you off or anything but the Jags engine tuning makes it very smokey indeed, and its front drive only, like the Volvo but I reckon the Volvo handles better.

it is a lovely car, and obviously most have full leather, climate, 6disc etc all the bits and bobs, auto box is one of the best too, 3 of our people have them and all have been perfect.

None have the Jag but we have driven them but noone really liked the woodyness of the SE models

Not as worthey as the rest but

im sure i have seen a nice lotus (unsure on make)(not for sale but looks the bomb) might have more details on wednesday but i look at an automaitic and see american slowness for some reason

Autos are fab, manuals can be fun dont get me wrong, but its an outdated technology, I mean a part specifically designed to provide drive through friction and consquent wear is so antiquated, fluid drive is what its all about, plus how much "real" driving can you do in a 30 zone or stuck on the M6 north all day.

Would you wind your own windows through choice....nope, so why change gears??

Of course my GPS is a manual lol and a thrashing is excellent fun in a manual car with a decent engine! However if im going anywhere where there will be jams I take the BMW and waft hehe and my left leg thanks me.

my mum and dad have an s-class

its strange, because at a cruise on the motorway at say 70mph if mums driving (a lot faster if dad is), theres less engine noise then the stilo but slightly more wind noise.

but when acclerating (it is an auto), there is slightly more engine noise then there is in the stilo :p

i personally would rather they have sticked with there last car which i liked :yum:, the s-class is a good motorway cruiser but round bends even with the suspension set on firm its quite wallowy

i also find the cabin to be quite tacky (the wood is real but has been made like its fake (n)). some of the switches and buttons leave a lot to be desired to ;)

Auto boxes don't know that you're about to take that tight right 50 yards ahead and want to power through it and out ;)

Whatever you do avoid the Rover 75. The thing is nice enough for pottering about and the 2.5 v6 is actually spirited, however the auto box is the worst I've ever seen and kicks down at the most inappropriate times - usually when there is a big lorry coming and you just want drive.........

Can recommend s-type diesel auto though, very smooth linear power delivery, 35+ to gallon, handle amazingly well, and dont generally go wrong.
May be a bit expensive though. 2.5v6 petrol can be had with same box but plenty cheaper however and still do 30+mpg. hope this helps. (y)
