General Reasons why I SHOULD buy a mk2 unoT

Private auction that £120 is likely to be the seller or one of their mates.

The car doesn't look too bad difficult to tell from the photos, have you seen it in the flesh as such? Those arches look like they need a bit of attention. Best thing for it is get the interior stripped out, all the plastics off and find / iradicate all the corrosion then pump it full of waxoyl. Looks like there could be some corrosion appearing on the front turrets too.

Standard boost on a Mk2 is suppose to be 0.7bar (Mk1 is 0.6bar). Standard ignition map is valid to approx 1.0bar and a genuine Fiat head gasket should be able to take that.

yup thats the one. picking it up tommorrow, so will give pics and that then

I like that colour, red (but on a mk1 :) ) and the dark grey anthracite colour.
I like the tacky 80's/90's stripes and coloured door bottoms (to make it look like th jap imports of the time).

yeah I'm gonna tackle him about the price jack, as it did suck. rear arch's I'm prepared for, they were welded last year and then haven't been protected, so may need to do em again, or just rip the whole arch out and put a new one in (still available?). but the front arch's, erm yeah, if they go thats a hell of a lot of work. best bet is I'll look at them and stabilize any current rot, then cut and stick some new metal, but because its structual/front archs/engine mounts/suspension mounts all in one, don't know how MOT friendly repairing the fronts would be.

no I haven't seen the car  daft I know, but if its a complete pilo O wnk then I will be leaving it with him, I've asked some pretty specific questions so no excuse really.

wasn't you who bid bumped it were you? lets just say I wouldn't be best pleased to ever meet you LOL, or whoever it was

TBH £720 is like top whack of what its gonna be worth in the near future, so it kinda of seals the fact I'll HAVE to keep it :)) ) as selling it would just be daft LOL>
I can probably realistically expect £7-800 for the punto, but would've liked more, so if anybody is after an immaculate mk1 punto (in need of an engine mount, will sort before sale) with some tastful fiat optional extra type modifiactons (like cinquepunto's) give me a buzz. I'd rather see it go to a FF member or the like than the usual  *

WOOT!!!

Bought it, thought I shouldn't have. its a bit more rotton than I was expecting, but the archs front and rear are sound, the floor pan is sound, rust on bottom of passenger side door is terminal, drivers side is minimal and can be fixed.

engine is weird, it starts first time when absoltutly cold and idles pretty good for about a minute then it drops to 800rpm(Correct RPM) but it lumpy as anything and stinks.
when warm it takes two cranks, or a bit of gas and first crank. and idles OK, but stinks and is very jerky if near idle in gear (1st/2nd/3rd), I mean under 2k,
boosts OK, doesn't smoke on boost, but does smoke when idling/starting from warm*
*I think this is either unburn't fuel pooling somewhere then been cleared out, or its oil leaking into the turbo/manifold somehow.
when I picked it up it was Ok on oil, half way home it had drank about half a litre (can't tell really as the oil dipstick is useless!), and the top end is soudning tappety WHEN HOT, when its cold is alright. its only tappety around 3,000-3,250rpm, then it clears up.

it doesn't knock atall. however it has hit 0.9/0.95 bar on the factory gauge (is it accurate?) when flat out in 4th/5th.

gearbox wise, I think its strong enough, diff seems fine, it feels solid, just knocks at low revs when the engine is jerking. and the gearlever is wobbly side to side quite a lot (think its down to a badly worn linkage), also it doesn't like coming OUT of 4th gear (weird eh, goes in and out of all the other gears much better than my punto does, inc reverse!).

suspension wise, its solid at the front no play. however one damper is shot (will replace tommorrow) and there is a bit of knocking (can't feel thru steering) on the left front, I think its antiroll bar bushs/knocking onto the underside.

ROT wise, its not death sentance worthy, bad bits are...
drivers side rear wing, the rot is bad around th eplastic in one place, and its about 2-3" diameter, won't be able to hide it without cutting/welding in new bits of the panel, or replacing the panel altogether.
passenger door bottom, theres plenty of NA uno's in this colour so hoping I can pick up a door cheap.
drivers side A pillar. THIS was what gets me VERY worried. it its a solid bit of surface blister, but I'm very apprehensive about attacking it! its a structural part of the car and about 4" up the pillar from the mirror. I can't push a screwdriver thru it, I'm hoping just a bit of surface blister from windsreen been fitted sometime back.

will get pics up this evening, and maybe a vid of the tappety'ness at 3k.

GOOD POINTS
drives alright, although steering was stiff when I picked it up (been parked up for 6week (n) ), boosts nicely, tis a lot quicker than I was expecting, will light up in the tyres in 2nd gear if on uneven road. boost in 5th gear is my fav, 60-70-80-90, oooppps.
interior is MINT, I mean almost immaculate! the seats are ALL FIRM and clean, no tears/rips/holes/burn marks.
the dash is unmolested and original, only one scuff in passenger foot well (surprised that was all!).
the boot carpet is nice and dry, the rear turrets have some surface rust on last years welds, but other than that are spotless! :) the spare wheel well was dry and clean enough.

sorry this has been an essay, theres just so much to mention, mostly bad. I feel I've overpayed for this thing by £300 easily, to me its probably worth like £400, but I payed £700

Welcome to the wonderful world of uno turbo ownership! doesnt sound to bad, ut's do drop the revs after a min as the cold start valve shuts off (far to early imo) sort the pics out and you'l always get a helping hand and info from us all!!! first id give it a good checking over, sevice it, is this the ut from manchester, i thought i had the only manc ut, well maybe now i have eh!! not seen another in a year and that was scrap, infact prob still in the front garden rotting, it had head gasket failure, no fuel pump and various pipes missing for £100, in rosso red on an l reg, i think i'l cruise past see if its there and maybe break it, Ant!

found pics of banger, was a nice car quite a lot of rust on osr but the rest aint that bad, could go again but havnt the time with working full time (panel beater/painter) and foreigners, its tax ran out in 2004 so aint been anywhere in a while, he has a glanza now, Ant!

Oh dear, sorry to say but by the description £700 was way too much for a knackered Mk2 UT and you should have walked away, will be a headache and money pit if it has engine troubles. Would have been better off paying a little more and buying a good one.

How much MOT has it got? If it's a full year I'd question how it achieved it with your description, not difficult though if you know the right people.

I paid £500 and got 2 ut's (h that was broke as a spares, donor) and (K) that lives on! Ant!

Those were the days - not like that any more

£700 sounds a little on the high side Faster4, but if it runs and has a reasonable amount of MOT then it's not an outrageous figure these days.

Under a grand you WILL find rust in a UT, and possibly with those that are above that price! As long as all the running gear is present and correct, plus works reasonably well then you will be able to do something with it.

First thing should do is give it a service. That way you will see if anything needs doing plus you'll see if the car will run better afterwards. Then I'd inspect the shell properly in all the crucial Uno rust spots. This will be mainly underneath (floorpan) and anywhere that is structural. If it is a bit rotten then think about buying a good 1.0 shell as they crop up fairly often for about £200. Believe me, by the time you start paying out for arches/ doors/ welding/ respraying it would have been way cheaper to simply reshell into a better shell in the first place. It's fairly simple to swap everything over and in the process you'll also get to examine every part of the car for good measure.

Anyway, good luck and welcome to the world of Unos and rust! :p

thought you said the gearbox was about to implode?

well been running it last two days and it seems to be holding out.
off to the scrappers today to find a door. after that its just one rear arch either needs some serious work or just replacing (hard).
I actually went and spoke to the MOT guy, seemed alright.

structurally and floorpan wise it's solid, better than most I've seen. its just them rear archs, one can be repaired (minor under the plastic blistering) the other would be a metal work/fab job or just replace it.

as for a reshell, thought it had to be a tubby shell as the brakes are in the wrong place? like a remote resivoir setup?
anyway, I don't have the space at uni to reshell, and if it goes home, it'll never get touched.

will get pic's today (y)

oh, the guy phoned me, and instead of offering money off has offered me a shed full of spares, inc two engines (one mk1 one mk2 I think), ones mint and in bits, the other was 'before being fixed' was his words, so reckon somethings duff on it. and some spare other bits and bobs. for FREE, just got to go BACK to sodding manchester to pick it up, which is over 300miles.

Yup, I SHOULD have told him to shove it and walked away (very quickly) but thats just me I thought I could maybe get something from it.

Oh dear, well atleast the spares should be worth something - get the engines on ebay at £100 BIN and you've got something back. I think there was a door on ebay possibly right colour, worth a look. I might pay a visit to the local scrap yard for something to do, if they have a car there, I'll let you know.

The MOT is sounding more and more dodgy by the minute. How can this car have 12 months MOT if one of the rear arches needs replacing or was it hidden under a plastic cover? I thought the plastic covers were only present on the front. Corrosion or holes in the arch would be a failure, corrosion within 30cm of structural area. If it's very bad might be worth a chat with VOSA even rust doesn't move that quickly. When was the MOT done?
