Had a nasty incident today, drove through a section of road where the foundation had sunk leaving a relatively deep dip in the road that annoyingly was virtually invisible. As the car went through it it threw me up out of my seat nearly and when the suspension returned to normal it made a sickening noise from the rear right which was now sitting low. I was only going about 15 mph and no where near violent enough to do any damage. On inspecting the rear corner (easier said than done as this is wheel chair adapted and has no jack!) the coil spring had jumped out and got wedged up sideways. I don't see how this happened as the spring is under considerable tension when the suspension is at full travel. It was relatively easy to put back once the shock absorber was detached and the car jacked up. Had it come out completely lord knows what would have happened.

You should definately:

a) Contact FIAT Customer Services (with photos if possible) in case of future problems arising from it

b) take photos of the road and contact the council and ask for compensation for your time.
If they tell you to p*** off, take out a Small Claims against them for your labour and inconvienience. It will cost about £30 online (Northampton County Court) and you can add your time and effort to the claim as you did the legal work yourself.

Google "CAG" (Consumer Action Group) and have a read through some relevant stuff...

have fun ;)
