The auld lad's GP got rear ended at some speed yesterday (motorway, car in front jammed on, he stopped in time but the tailgating 4x4 behind didn't. Other guys insurers have admitted liability on his behalf, but in the interim - the boot hatch won't close now. It'll sit down in position but won't actually lock

Is this indicitive of more major damage than just a completely buggered bumper? Not having another GP to compare to (unlike the fleet of Pandas we have) I can't tell if something looks amiss.

Dont worry if its an insurance job, most likely the bootlid has been shortened if a 4x4 hit it and the catch / latch are out of alignment. Even if the boot floor is kinked it can probably be jigged up. If not its a write off and its New Car time... (y)

Theres only one second hand of what he has at the moment (MultiJet, but its the 90hp not the 75 he had) in the entire country, and its got a Cork plate on it which I don't think he'd want :D

Meh...... lifes hard at times but cant be helped at the mo, as long as the driver is OK thats really all that matters.

You'd be surprised what will write of a car especially a 'budget' brand one such as a fiat.

An insurance company will write off a car simply if the cost of the repair is more than the cost of the full vehicle payout.

I would imagine in this instance, that is not the case. you never know thou

No its usually a percentage (usually upto 60%) of the 'used' value as in what it will cost to get one same age same millage and condition.

But yes without seeing the damage its hard to tell would need to be quite heafty to cost £3000+ and write the car off.

Im sure its not a write off, insurance companys will rather not spend out on a new car

you would be surprised how much damage can be done even a rear ender at 30mph is enough to write many cars off especially as the rear cross member transfers all the force into the chassis if thats out of kilter its off to the great car yard in the sky

To the OP is the spare wheel well distorted?

I take it the airbags didnt blow?

even if they didnt the car will require a structural survey to assess the affect on the chassis. If even the smallest damage is done to any of the shock transfer parts of the car it will probably be written off.

If I was you I would be hoping for a write off and look 4 a new car.

Airbags didn't go, wheel well doesn't look distorted to me. The insurers are meant to come out tomorrow to 'take a look' and I'm going to insist it gets taken in to a garage for the suspension to be checked out rather than trusting what a suit from the AA can tell by looking at the visible damage.

Went and took another look at the wheel well now I'm home - the spare is trapped - I can't get it out at all.

going by that it will be a write off.......

if you want to get it out let the air out of it ;) but best leaving it so the insurance assessor can see that its bent

I got a mk1 punto repaired from a situation like that a cost of 950 quid and that was jigged and had a new rear faceplate. However a gp might be a different propostion altogether.

What insurance company is dealing with it? I last dealt with Alianz (my own insurer - was hit by un-insured drunk driver), had a 2004 Opel Combo smacked from side at around 30mph - sent want into spin. Caused substantial amount of damage - entire side was bent in, needed new door, side panel and some jig work. €5000 was the bill, van worth only around €6000-€6500.

Was sent to Ace on Richmond Road, guys did a superb job - even got a replacement for 7 days. Had to pay VAT and other taxes and excess though (~€200).

So I'd say unless the damage is substantial they'd repair it.

Axa.

They're being ******es because "we cannot contact the other driver", the father is telling them to contact the police in that case. Pity he didn't let me pretend to be him on the phone, I've more experience of dealing with insurers, but they'll only speak to the insured (him) or the driver (also him)...

Me too,costng £1250! I was expecting a cheque for £600...oh well.

(that was esure)

Mine didn't involve an insurance company was hit by a lad who didn't want to wipe his no claims out. Although he nearly shat when I gave him the fiat body shop claim....1600 quid anyone? on a car i'd only bought 2 weeks earlier for less than that. But got a quote for 1170 which was the best quote I got from a decent body shop. Who then decided that the bent (1 week old) exhaust could be made good and refunded me that part of the bill, result as it ran on for another year.

€3154.37 is the quote from Airton Fiat there. Bumper, bumper bar, reg plate, 4 lights, 2 arch liners, boot trim, new lock, "make medallion", "type plate" - sounds like they're repainting the boot? - and bumper crossrails (what are these?) plus labour, paint and car hire.

He can nominate someone to speak to them on his behalf.
