Can anyone tell me how much oil the rear differential is supposed to take on the twinair 4x4? My manual doesn’t list the gearbox and differential separately. It just says transmission/differential 1.6l I think from memory it is roughly 300ml but hoping someone can confirm

Model
Twinair 0.9
Year
2013
Its specified in weight... It equates to something like 365cc if I remember right. Search on here there has been some recent discussion and a procedure for changing it was identified. The diff contains a pump and this needs to be primed and the diff topped up after. I was pretty suprised how little oil it contains. I bought the oil from S4P but have not changed it yet. I sure l litre does nearly three fills.

Thanks, that’s perfect. I bought 1l from shop4parts and was hoping it would be an enough. Did you get the perteonas tutella transmission gearforce? I’ll save those posts for bedtime reading about priming the pump. I have MES if needed too. I’m hoping to run a magnet through my old oil to see if I have any metal shavings in there. I suspect my rear differential is causing some issues but thought this would be a low cost first step.

Yes Tutela. There were another few posts re oil. A 'competitor' oil was suggested then someone else added that this oil and its maker had failed OIl Industry Test Standards. This both reinforces and confirms my view that sticking with the makers recommendations is best. Twin air oil, and Panda 4x4 diff oils do quite a lot of work. Anything even slighhtly substandard is unlikely to do the required jobs well for more than a limited time. Many makers dont do an oil which they recommend for the 4x4 diff which says much to me. Im going to change my oil then thinking of driving it slowly on the road forward then backwards as required to prime it and then top it up. I can easily do the underneath stuff over my pit so jacking is not needed. My road is quiet and its flat.

The ref to gearbox and differential is the front differential, which is contained within the gearbox (on 2WD as well as 4WD.

The rear differential oil is different. And on the diesel (which I know yours isn’t), there’s an extra oil for the transfer gear unit too.

When you say the rear differential oil is different do you mean different grade as well? I have ordered tutela transmission gearforce because that’s what the manual said but I hadn’t considered it was talking about the front differential. Hoping to get the car up on the ramps this weekend and change it. I might fit some dampeners to the rear brakes while I’m under there too and see if I can get rid of the noise they make.

Hi i think its 900ml the grade is 75/90 but you cant go wrong just fill it to it starts running out then close it up
Somewhere on here there is a more detailed filling procedure to ensure the clutch portion of the diff is filled - I think there is a bit more to it than wait till it comes out of the fill plug??

In the TA the gearbox and rear diff have different oil. The diff oil seems to be pretty specific in its requirements Tutela Cross available in 500ml bottles for diff and Tutela Technyx for the gearbox. I have seen dampeners for teh rear discs on Mopar uk site and also on eBay but you need to watch and wait as the price varies hugely from one offering to another. I have then on my Waze as it was delivered and the brakes have so far not made the noise so they do seem to work. Maybe you could get them from a breaker there is certainly a waze on eBay breaking at the moment.

I know this is for a diesel, but the rear differential the same a cross the range and note different from the front differential/ gearbox. ( whilst the gearbox and front differential share common oil, In reality they are compartmentised. I.e. when you drain you will see significant change in colour between the two zones.) Some vendors have not realised that front and rear different.

Thanks. Seems I bought the wrong transmission oil. I will send it back and get the transmission cross one because I bought the gear force one. I was looking in the main manual and I had forgotten about the little 4x4 addition booklet and like yours mine mentions the rear diff and the transmission cross oil and the volume required. Thanks everyone!

That image is for the older 169 model supplement I think (based on the graphic design of the pages)
The latest manual (mine's dated June 2017, supplied with a 2018 4x4) covers both the 2WD and 4WD versions (Cross and Non-cross) in the same 200-plus page handbook... This doesn't show the quantity in ml, but the weight in kg... but it is the same rear diff oil as the older model (@euroben Note the newer spec for the main gearbox on the TwinAir model -- Technyx, not Gearforce-- and that there's a little more oil in the front end with the 4x4 versions)

No it from the 312 from a 2013 vehicle 4x4 supplement .

I stand corrected :) (Its a while since I sold my 2012 4x4)... My 2017 and then 2018 models had it all in the one book. I edited my reply above to include all the relevant lubricant info pages as it may be of use to those reading this thread at a later date

I watched an interesting YouTube video a couple of nights ago by drivenmad titled "Differential oil change on our 2021 Fiat Panda 4x4"
This could be worth a watch

They dont do it correctlyI Useful to see but not done properly so not all the oil would have been changed and they clearly didnt know what they were really doing. Inside the diff is a pump controlled by a solenoid. The whole point of the special oil is to cope with both the differential gears while accomodating the pump. There is not a lot of point in leaving 25% of the old oil unchanged insid ethe pump.. Might as well not bother.
