confirmed...

the op will need soft faced hammer or two bolts to get the drum off...

and a lotta filing for the wear lip.

It's the rounded head on the drum bolt that will cause me a bit of a headache to start with.

Then I'll see what condition it's all in and maybe buy one of these kits....

Seem like decent value for £85. I think there was one available in the classifieds on here but I imagine it's been sold as it was a few weeks ago now.

Could you let us know the name of this "specialist", so we can avoid it because of the prices ?

Thanks
Ming

I'll check what was included for the £250, maybe I have got it wrong and something else was done at the same time.

Out of interest what should a specialist charge for a cambelt and water pump change? I did think it seemed a lot but then previously I have paid over £500 for a full belt change on a Clio, more than once actually....

as above, its very common. I generally have to clean them up every year. Clean them properly and bit of coppaslip on the joint and you may just get away with 2 years (if your lucky).

I was going to add guys as this is very common for the joint to seize so i modded mine and drilled them out and replaced with Short Alan socket head stainless bolt nylock nut and 2 brass washers tighten till no side movement only lateral and have never had a sticky one since done 3 years ago now ;) it is tight when putting them back in but they do fit (y)

Someone mentioned a lot of filing to a wear lip, I assumed that would be the drums? If that was the case I'd rather just get new drums.

Nah. It's just the wear lip/rust lip on the very edge of the drum. Emery cloth, production or even sand paper works just as well.

But you should do it each time the drum comes off, so replacing every time is pretty silly/expensive.

If you have a friend with a lathe (doesn't everyone in Wakefield?) they'll be able to do it in a couple of minutes.

not a lot 100 GBP tops for labour in back street garage

the belt, belt tensioner, and pump are cheap all you need is single axel stand and dry afternoon kerbside. The wee engine is simple to maintain.

if you inspect the linings (there is normally an inspection hole on the drum) and there is less than 2mm id just get shoes

if the drum is oval then machine or new drum

the file only takes 5 mins a drum

you would still need to pull the drum next year the steel pivot will gall from the road salt even if new, a CRES rivet would fix, but you still have to adjust the hand brake cable.

if the hub has been cooked you may need a new hub sooner rather than later that is not difficult either.
