General Real world MPG

General Real world MPG

I made the videos you guys were talking about with my car...

Thanks for your efforts with the video clips.
I can’t say I dwelt much on the T-Jet performance.
But I guess they confirm, as expected, that petrol mpg falls as speed increases.

This is in some contrast with M-Jet performance – where, depending on the rev envelope, diesel mpg improves as speed increases.
Most of the time my black-box is set to [av.mpg] read-out – but sometimes I switch to [inst. mpg] for the fascination of watching mpg improve when moving towards & holding at around 2Krevs/70mph.

In your Golf 2.0 TDI clips (#53) – it appears to me there’s not much difference in the mpg read-outs, although at 65mph there appears more fluctuation. At 50mph your revs appear around 1.6K - whereas at 65mph a sweeter 2K.

Recently I’ve been using a SEAT Exeo (aka Audi A4 B7) 2.0 120HP TDI. The av.mpg is 49.3 – but falls back without a good 70mph run.

I am currently getting between 12 and 18mpg out of the v8 range rover but I am hoping for 40 to 50 mpg out of the bravo 165 sport

I can tell you without doubt you will get between 40 and 50. If you are on long motorway runs you may even get slightly more if you take it easy.

Are we saying here then what I was thinking regarding Multijet's, specifically the 2.0 in my case...

I have thought for a while now that whether I do 60mph on my commute (which most would consider more fuel efficient) or 70mph (just below 2k revs) I achieve the same fuel economy. I have concluded that I am better off sitting at 70mph as my fuel consumption is no higher than at 60, I just get to and from work in less time.

I use exactly half a tank per week for the same journey 5 days per week whether I do 60 all week or 70. This obviously goes out the window if I exceed 70.

What the average mpg read out says on the dash is another matter as it reads an improvement of about 3/4 mpg over the week if I sit at 60 however when it comes to fuel consumption there is no noticeable difference.

I guess this would be different for smaller diesels but with the 2.0 it seems more content sitting at a steady 70mph than at 60.

I drove from London to Sheffield in just under 3 hours and I managed 40MPG cruising at 75mph - and I wasn't even trying.. However on the way back I just wanted to get home so it managed a pathetic 29MPG.. haha!

Birmingham to London and back, around 300 miles averaged out @ 43.7mpg. Bravo 1.9 150 mjet. Cruise control @ 65mph on the way there and the readout said 42.0mpg.

No cruise control on, 80-90mph on the way back showed the 43.7mpg when I got home. Four adults in relative luxury, no complaints.
