My 2020 Panda makes a rattling noise when not started for a few days. The rattle goes away after a second or two. The oil level is spot on. Any ideas, please?
Cheers
Tony

Hydraulic tappets do this. Poor quality oil makes it worse. Petronas Syntium (rubbish) Castrol Edge not much better. I now use Quantum Platinum Premium Plus C3 fully synthetic. Its actually quite well priced and not expensive. Its VW oil and it has stopped all the rattling which I suspect does'nt do the engine much good. I can leave the car unused for 2 weeks before I get just a little rattling. Rattling is normal to some extent, but this oil brand has sorted it on all 3 of our 1.2 engines. Fuchs OIls may be the same stuff exactly.

Always start the engine and dont rev it up until then oil light goes out, and it shouldnt be a problem. I recommend chaging to the Quantum oil when its next changed.

Many thanks "The Panda Nut".
I can't really change the oil use as I get it serviced at a Fiat garage and the car came with a 10 year factory guarantee (I'm in France - don't know if such things existed in the UK), so I can't start doing oil changes myself.
Thanks again
Tony

It's a 1.2 litre 4 cylinder engine (69hp). The current "mileage" is 47900 kilometres, but it's been making the rattling noise ever since we first got it about 3 years ago, at around 30000 kilometres.

I have a twinair (TA) engined 4x4 so don't have any specific experience to share, the TA can be noisy starting after not being used but it has the funky TA valve actuation - this I would expect to be oil draining from the TA system.

However, I don't believe the 1.2 FIRE engine has hydraulic tappets see this thread in another section, but same engine; https://www.fiatforum.com/threads/rattling-noise-on-start-up.442800/

It could be that tappet clearances require adjustment but the fact that it goes away suggests that it is oil circulation related. Keep up the service requirements to maintain the warranty is the best I can suggest!

Envious of your location, I have enjoyed a couple of great holidays on and around the Charente!

If this has happened since it's last service it could be the anti-drain back valve in the oil filter not working properly. A simple oil filter change could cure it.

Thanks "KPat"
It's been making the rattling noise ever since I first got it. It's been serviced each year by a proper Fiat garage who have hopefully fitted a proper Panda oil filter each time - so one bad oil filter is a possibility, but 3 bad oil filters seems unlikely. When I take it in for its service I do tell the service department to wait a few days before starting it and to listen out for the rattling noise...
Thanks again,
Tony

Dont be lured into tappet works. The tappets are only adjustable by shimming. I had mine all checked due to this noise, and all were around 20 - 45000 miles at the time. All done by Fiat, and all still within factory tolerances. All of them rattle on startup after more than 24 hours parked up. Excepting since the improved oil which means we now get 10 days rattle free parking. If you use a decent oil its nothing to be concerned about, and my experience is the most suitable oil will largely queit it. Its a feature mentioned ny many others on the site.

Explain "rubbish".
Petronas is manufacturer of Selenia oils, highly regared in the Alfa Romeo and Abarth world.
Our Euro 6 Alfa Giulietta MultiAir 170HP, bought new in 2016, is doing great on Petronas Syntium 7000E, 0W30, C2 and so does the 2018 Panda TwinAir.
But it is harder to find these days, so I'm switching to Castrol Magnatec, as soon as I'm out of Petronas...

Nothing to disagree with here. Halfords had a deal on Syntium grades a year or so ago that made it cheaper then their own brand - can't say I looked recently, the last batch I got was from Shop 4 Parts seemed available ok there, which reminds me...

I used it.
After 500 miles it had turned the colour of rust. The rattles on start up had massively increased and even after 2 hours standing it made awful noises on start up. Running was harsh. After 1000 miles I drained it and changed to Castrol. In 50 years of motoring I have never seen oil perform like this or degrade so much. I wouldny used it tooil the mower wheels. Rubbish is avery polite and nice way to describe my experience with it. May be it was a fake product I encountered.

The Castrol that followed was badly contaminated by the residue and was changed after 4000 miles. Its now another 4000 miles since that change to Quantum and we are back to normal. The car can still be left 10 days and started without any tappet rattles and is again a smoothe as silk. While the Castrol was / is much better, it seems to degrade early to me. Ive noted low oil pressure running castrol before soits not a preferred choice for me. Its Ok I think but not the Pandas best oil by a mile. Im Ok with, Shell Helix, Total, Esso, Mobil among others but Quantum clearly and by a mile suits Pandas best, at least in this area. Im sure climate is a factor.

I use it too, in two different cars, and my experiences are completely the opposite.
I keep on using it as long as I can get it, than switch to Castrol Magnatec.
There must have been something very wrong with your engine to behave like this....!!
