You've got one hell of a dent in the sump by the looks of it -- needs replacing or at least bashing out. I'd not rule out a fractured front exhaust mount or a blowing exhaust or a loose heat sheild.

Mk1's are prone to loosing the exhaust support by the front flexi section. Best way of locating may be a stethoscope. Stocked by all good motor factors (and hospitals).
