Technical RAN OUT OF FUEL NOW WONT START ..

HELP, took scudo for mot it ran out of fuel whilst on ramp, now wont start any ideas garage thinks its the fuel pump. looking for replacement pump, but garage says it will be to expensive to fix? its a 2007 ex taxi, was running well until fuel ran out (diesel) any other possible explanation?

Assuming nothing else happened whilst at MOT (high revving during smoke test on old high mileage engine?) it should only be a case of getting the air out of the fuel filter, if the battery hasn't been flattened and it is spinning over well.
Not always easy to tell but does it sound like it normally does with four good compressions when cranking over or too easy/ not normal?
Were you standing beside the car when it happened during test I mean?
Was it very low on fuel, i.e. warning light on etc.?

Many diesels are a pain to start after running out of fuel, you normally need to prime or bleed the fuel system.

This one doesn't have a primer pump? Older diesel cars used to have that.

However, being an ex-taxi and high mileage, the fuel pump might have had it. Lack of fuel in the tank for a longer time will harm any fuel pump.
