exactly the reason propper 4x4 offroaders have BIG but very thin wheels. cut thru the mud (in our case water) to get to the hard stuff under it

most that i see have little wheels (15's) and massive tyres(profile and width)
But they must all be wrong
must be differnt sport. Im not sure what it was I went to see but it was jsut loads of 4x4s (some milatry stuff to!) just slowly driving around in about a foot deep mud with loads of SILLY steep hills to climb up!

Look at WRC cars when they do events in Sweden in the snow, very narrow high profile (ie high sidewall) tyres to cut through the snow.
Gravel events wider wheels/tyres with large tread block normally 15" wheels on fairly high profile tyres so side walls flex to give grip.
Tarmac events widest wheels by some margin, v.low profile tyres so no side wall flex to gain best grip.
Obviously its not just tyres changed depending on surface, but most noticeable to the spectator.
