radiator fan

this may sound stupid but does the fan directly behind the radiator turn while the car is running idle? mine isnt and the engine is smelly and is v hot, just wondering?

When u say the engine is "very hot" do you mean it feels hot to the touch, or the temp gauge on the dash reads very hot?

The fan should come on if the engine is genuinely hot as indicated by the temp gauge, but not otherwise.

I would only usually expect it to come on when sitting in stationary traffic on a hot summers day, or when working very hard going up a big hill with a big load on a hot day.

the temp gauge reads normal {just under halfway} but the engine is rather hot to touch and theres a sort of burning smell like an old engine would give off after only short distances travelled ,my cars a p reg. thanx
