hi guys,

found some oilish like mix in my coolent water,

is it time for head gasket and what can i prepare myself for whilst the dollars are still in my pocket?

yeah mine did that before the gasket went big time.
If you used antifreeze, it should be not too expensive, if you didn't the head will need to be welded at an engineering co to fix the wear from the corrosive water. Cost me about 300gbp all told. As you then need a decoke set and might as well do the timing belts and pullies while you are in there, also the two waterseals you can reach on the open side of the enigine are prone to rust (as is the other, but its a bitch to get to).

was planing to get a full overhaul of the engine anyhow... keeping my fingers crossed theres not to many sh!t that went bad. car stil drives i just dont want to push my luck. gona do the engine this week unlucky for me cos i am not gona be there when its done, wud hav loved it as i am traveling with work again (n)
need to do frost plugs also while i am at it, any tips on cleaning the radiator ?

lucky enough i got all the engine parts at one place, die hele toetie!

thx mates u guys are the greatest ever

Take it to your local motor mac. They will throw stuff in the radiator, then ask you to drive a bit and a come back. Then they connect it up to a machine that flushes the crap out. Endlessly more effective than buying Wyn's radiator flush.

Remember to ALWAYS use antifreeze, if you did you would not have issues with radiator or the gasket for that matter. If you are getting new valves there is another cost (included in my estimate) of haveing the rockers adjusted, apparently its quite a difficult job,and mine was done at the same engineering co that fixed the corrosion damage to my head (caused by not useing antifreeze).

While you are at it, inspect all rubber hoses for the water system for brittleness and cracks, also inspect the metal pipe just above the oil filter, it is the pipe comeing out of the waterpump, I recently had to replace mine as it started to leak due to corrosion at the joint, it was only like R100 or so.

Also check fuel lines and the pipe between the carb and vacuum advance, buy 2m of 5mm fuel hose from Midas and you can re-do all those little pipes in the car. My vacuum advance pipe was realy shot - as was the advance.

Other things that will go soon if they have not started are the clutch master and slave as well as the brake master as well as the little piston jobbies on the rear wheels that actuate the brakes (R60 each, and kits for the others much less), basicaly everything rubber on these cars starts to degenerate at 15 years or so. Even my suspension bushes are now getting tired. You can realy do the clutch jobs yourself with very little experience (like me), just make sure the rubbers in the replacement kit looks EXACTLY like the old ones, had some issues with cheap fakes.

thx guys, i all ready did the clutch master and slave, boy was that a hassel.
vacuum advance and pipe is stil ok. I MUST do the rear brakes soon because i have no rear brakes, why?, copper or mild steel brake fluid pipes coroded and i closed it of at the brake master cylinder..hehehe Shhh! dont want my traffic cops to know this...

Will give the radiator a proper flush when i am busy overhauling the engine, that will be this coming weekend.gona take alot of pictures.

I basical want to get the car up to working order.

thanx for the support again,as usual you guys are tops! :slayer:

No brakes is more likely a problem with the front...
My uno has just over 200k on and we could still see the factory marks on the rear pads when we replaced the calipers on the rear recently (about R60 each)... the rubbers go flat and then dirt gets in and they get fubar.

Check the front brake hoses, my one had a nasty blockage, and of coarse the brake master has seen similar hours of operation as the clutch master and slave (my neck was screwed for 2 days from the contortion of fitting the latter), so it is likely time for a new kit.

You can fix all those issues for small change.

Hyperspace i replaced the front disks recently and it felt like ABS brakes i tell you! the rear pads are fine. with me i have to replace complete handbrake cable which is a hassel to get hold of,guess i just have to strip one off a old uno,fix the brake fluid pipes and see.

I am away from home, again, cant wait to get back and do the engine with my good old mec mate.will keep this thread alive

But for the main event, the paint job i most def gona take before and afters...

People be hate'n on me asking crap questions why i dont loose the car but i love uno's,had the Turbo before if i did nt overturn it i wud stil be driving it today!

cheers mates!!!

lol yeah my handbrake is pretty useless unless you realy pull it, have adjusted it a few times, but never any good for more than a week.

I know what you mean about the Uno thing, I have a new daughter and have been looking for a new car thats more practical, guess what I choose, a 5 door Uno. I don't think there is a cheaper car to keep on the road and repair, then add the panelvanlike bootspace, and its as good as a small bakkie. Allthough I'm tempted by a jetta too (had a nice passat once), feul consumption and the small boot realy put me off.
