my 3rd brakelight has a mind of its own, works as and when it feels like it, have checked connectors on boot sil, still nothing, umm... i'm not fussed! i dont see it so outta sight outta mind etc etc. but how would it affect an MOT test? could i fail on that.
PS is there anything else worth trying with getting it to work properly everytime.

One of the peculiarities of the MOT test is that you can not have things on a car and it will pass but if fitted, they have to work.

I've just been looking at the rules of MOT and i think that as long as the lamp comes on and is not more than 50% covered you're alright.

Though if you wanted you could remove the third brake light totally and it would pass.
Probably depends on the tester as to how harsh they will be.

I wouldn't recommend removing it though. You are 60% less likely to have someone go into the back of your car with a working 3rd brake light.

It sounds like you have a loose connection, these are always most likely to happen where the wires move, check the wires between the boot lid and the body of the car for problems.

have taken cover off on the boot lid, pushed and tugged wires all secure and not going anywhere, have removed light played with it and replaced it, ya know all the obvious stuff it just seems to have a mind of its own, will try some WD40 on connectors. is that safe?

No dont use WD40, use switch cleaner. Maplins sells it.

Works when it wants? It is a loose connection somewhere, either in the light itself or the cables leading to it. It will have a plug and socket somewhere. seperate that and clean up the terminals. with contact cleaner. (as joske says. Maplins)
