Question from a newbie with a snapped cam belt on a 2003 Punto 1.2 8V

Hi everyone. My first post and with a problem I need to solve! I recently bought a 2003 Punto 1.2 8V as a cheap hack, 40,000 miles with documented Fiat history. On the M1 at 70mph the cambelt snapped. My question is 'is this a so-called safe engine' or will the valves have hit the pistons? I have a mechanic friend that is going to take a look at it but just wanted an idea of just how bad it might be inside?! Thanks.

It is a safe engine. More of an inconvenience than a major mechanical nightmare

New belt and a bit of TLC and you're off again

its safe and should be changed at least every 5 years
