I have just sent this email to the walkers company after reading the back of a quavers packet...

I have been a dedicated vegetarian for 12 years now and have always thought that your 'Quavers' were not suitable for myself and other vegeterians to eat. Having noticed the reverse of one of your packets saying that they are suitable I decided to try them. It was to my horror to discover under the ingredients section on the back of your multi-pack packaging and on your web site it states that Animal Rennet is included within the cheese powder in your crisps. And yet it is clearly stated that they are suitable for vegetarians.

I would be most grateful for some sort of clarity on where I now stand having consumed a packet of 'Quavers'.

Looking forward to your reply
Kind regards

An unhappy veggy. (or perhaps no longer veggy, veggy).

There seems to be various classifications these days other than veggie or vegan. The idiots who call themselves veggie, but eat fish are in fact Pascarians. Veggie's who eat eggs and dairy produce are Ovo Lacto Vegetarians, which would include me. Appararently a strict vegetarian doesn't eat those either, but differs from a vegan in that vegans don't eat honey and don't use any animal based products, such as leather, etc.

It is very difficult because the are so many hidden animal bits, from Gelatine, Lecithin, Animal Suet/Renet to E Additives. I am quite happy to eat anything that doesn't require an animal to die for it to be made, but that is still surprisingly restricting. I also try to avoid other products that use animal bits, such as leather, animal hair brushes, etc.

I, on the other hand, Eat almost anything that moves :D I draw the line at dogs/humans/horses though. Meat is too god damn good!!!
I like to think that what I am eating suffered a quick death, like when I used to work in a chicken factory ( :( ) the chickens were stunned and killed outright.

(edited to add) I don't agree with Halal meat and avoid that wherever possible. I know it is in the interests of Religion to some, to follow the procedure of Halal but I am not one of them and Slitting the throat of an animal and leaving it to bleed to death/choke on it's own blood is not what I call humane.

I thought most cheese flavoured crisps weren't vegi friendly. Doritos, Cheese and Onoin and Quavers included. Some gum style sweets still contain animal rennet in them, so you should also avoid those.

I once gave some skips (the crisps) to a jewish friend of mine... not realising that a) jews don't eat prawns, and b) not realising that any prawn had actually ever seen the inside of the factory... What-a mistake-a to make-a.

Anyway the morale of the storey... Sometimes ignorance isn't bliss

Walkers Cheese and Onion are Veggie

Walkers Cheese and Onion potato heads ARENT Veggie

Quavers are still not Veggie (as far as I know) Neither are Doritos, Cool ranch and Tangy cheese - I think!

Walkers Chicken Potato heads ARENT Veggie either.

Hope this helps!
