Hey Kris, I'll check the CD Manual I have for the Panda, when I can find it??

BTW, the backlash is not adjustable. You're getting confused with a Crownwheel and pinion, where the drive goes through 90 degrees.

Mwuhahahahahaha! I just picked up the 500. New diff, new gearbox, new clutch. I pitched her around a tight corner near work that usually has the inside wheel spinning and the electronic interference light flashing. No such thing this time. It just shot out of the corner. In 6 minutes time I'm leaving work and heading to the city so I'll have a chance to play a bit on the way to dinner. More reporting back on the weekend once I've had a chance to properly play.

But for now WOOOOO!!!!!

I won't be at the Ace next month ('ring trip) but if anyone fancies a go to see the difference these make PM and if you're close we can meet up.

cheers
Jason

I'd love to have a go if you ever over this way again???

I'm also interested to know just how much of a difference this diff makes.

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got home from chewing through a tank of petrol coming home and then on to my fave local country lanes. :D

First impressions on the commute bit. The steering is slightly heavier but not tiring or annoyingly so. Sound wise its actually quieter than standard which sort of surprised me. You get a more mechanical sensation if that makes sense, as in you're aware of the presence of 'something' that wasn't there before. Not intrusively so, just sort of there in the back of your mind. But if you'd never driven an open diff 500 you probably wouldn't even notice it.

Now the fun bit. Thrashing on country lanes. Night and day difference. It takes a few familiar fun corners to re-calibrate your expectations and reactions. The front end feels like a different car. A much more planted car. Grippier but not in a sticky tyres sort of way. You feel like this is the way it was supposed to be all along. Whereas previously there was a lot of fuss and spin and suspension flopping about it now feels like you're in control. You can point the car in to a corner, keep the power steady and then accelerate out of the corner with none of the drama around unsettling it or bleeding off speed or the steering going wobbly or the wheels unbalanced. It just sticks and goes in a slightly disconcerting way.

It's hard to describe. The words I keep coming back to are solid and mechanical. You're aware that something mechanical is taming forces that previous conspired against you. You come into a corner where you know the inside has previously gone light and bled off power and you get a very feint sensation of 'something' progressive and well oiled happening up front for a split second and then you realise that there was no lightened wheel spinning sensation and holy **** you're on the straight after the corner. Then next time without realising it you're pushing harder and faster than you ever have.

After a very short space of time I was easily 10-15mph faster across my country lane route.

Awesome and huge thanks to Nigel for organising.(y) Nigel are you coming to Gaydon or Trax? You're welcome to have a thrash in it then.

:D

I chatted with Research FIAT yesterday when i ordered some parts.

I ordered parts 2,3,4,5,6,14,15 from the 100hp diagram, basically all new seals, speedo drive and bearings (excluding the preload spacer), parts availability is fine for all parts, and it comes to about £41 for the lot. Saves pulling the old bearings off and reusing parts.

I then had a word with the workshop manager. THey don't know the preload, and haven't had diff's out before, they say they have very few gearbox issues, and gave me the details of a race company in hinkley that have done some gearbox work for them, so I'll try them in a few days.

I also have a punto manual for 1.2/1.1, the sei manual, and a 1368cc punto manual. I have check the sei manual, but will dig through the rest soon :)

Nice update on how it drives, sounds amazing. Can't wait to get one in mine. Wish I had two now. One for the 100hp and one for the sei. Still, I'm meant to be leaving the 100hp standard

In the punto mk1 manuals I have dug this out. Can't get the punto 1368cc disc working at the moment.

Firstly 1108 and 1242 8v gearbox:

Then 1242 16v gearbox:

I can'd find the fiat procedures for setting it though. Looks like you just shim in and check remaninin gap though?

Hi Kristian, coul you post for me the actual gear ratios page like above please?

Thanks

Go and do an Autosolo in a standard Panda...............it's a whole new world of understeer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol. Yeah, I've heard that about the Panda. To be honest the 500 isn't as understeery as the Panda. It will when provoked but it's not as pronounced. At least not as pronounced as the Panda I drove. ATB equipped it's waaayyyyyy less so :D

Pulled from an alfa manual. Preload gap is the same at 0.12 and it explains how to measure the shim gap. No removal of the ring gear, and measuring torsion before the diff starts to rotate.

Finally looks like i've figured it all out. :) Making the measurments is the next stage.

Anyone else think this is the correct procedure?

Jason,

Thanks for the write up, glad you are happy with the diff now its fitted. Sorry I missed you both times you were here, sure I'll catch up at an event sometime soon to get some more feedbak.

For anyone else who wants the diff fitted, I'm sure Jason will now vouch for the service provided by Jon.

If anybody else would like his contact details please PM me, & dependet on gearbox condition as we did on ours and Jason's which to be fair were both new units, no new parts were needed as all original parts were removed and refitted on the new diff, but on older gearbox's this should be considered as Kristian has posted up what he has bought and its not to much at £40ish. Though I'm sure Jon could advise on this on dismantling and examining the current parts.

Aaron.

I know, I seemed to come and go just between when you were there. Are you coming to Gaydon on 6th?

Jon was great. We ended up chatting for ages about cars. He even let me crawl around under the Cinq which is very similar to what I want to achieve with mine.

And the diff is still huge fun. I've been slingshotting out of roundabouts for the past week and demolishing country lanes.

If you're brutal with the accelerator either on or off you do notice it wanting to hop left/right a bit more than standard too. But easy to anticipate.
