J333EVO, can you PM his contact details. I'd be interested in this. I've been looking around locally but it sounds like Jon has done it, knows what he's doing and honestly, I'd rather give the money to someone's mate than a random shop. I've got a brand spanking new 6 speed sitting on the shelf along with the diff I picked up from Nigel the other day and I can travel to wherever he is.

A PM is sent with Jon's contact details, and the fact you have gearbox off is ideal as has no intentions of removing and refitting anyones gearbox's :D

He is based like ourselves in Towcester, so if you have ever been to Silverstone Circuit, you will have been here, about 15miles past Milton Keynes, so easy access by either M1, A5, A43 etc etc
 
How much preload did he set? I have read lots of differnt methods and values.

I have no idea as we were on holiday when he fitted it, but all in I think he said it would take him about 3-4hours to fit one gearbox off the car and all bearings etc servicable.

TBH I'm expecting maybe a few others to ask for Jon to fit one like Jason has as its not as straight forward as at first may seem. It also may not be possible without major problems to fit without removing the gearbox first, which in itself can be a PITA to do without help from another able bodied person.

But is all the fun of getting new products, almost tempted to get the cover off the Sei and fit one to that just to see what its likes as its a few months off yet having the Cinq running, still waiting on Sparco roll-cage to arrive, and then need to decide on suspension although AVO is strong favorite at the moment for price and they are only 10miles away from the house.
 
Ive checked 3 cars. what year is yours?
best way to check on a cento is empty gearbox oil, drop the rear engine mount (passenger side) the engine then swings around a bit. remove the mount arm and then remove all the bolts (about 10) that hold the bottom of the diff casing on. (a couple are hard to get at but do able, and dont forget the 4 around the passenger drive shaft output bearing cover)
once done the case will drop down and you can see the diff (you can leave a few bolts in but loosen them and look thru the gap to see the crown wheel)

All the boxes ive checked so far i never used sealent. there machined so flat that it *wont* leak :)

untill we get a list of all the numbers found on the boxes we wont be able to do much more then look :(

Mine is a 1.4 16v March 2003 MK2b Punto box. What were your results?

You can't go by Gearbox casing number on this one, as one casing will be used for many different variants, according to Eper. I even found that one of Craigs numbers came up on Eper as non-existent??? Work that one out??? I took the number from his photo!!

The only way to find out is to look.
 
My punto 55 '6 speed' box is a bonded crown wheel just incase anyone thinks they could use that one :(

Its shocking. it seems fiat use what ever they have in the factory to build there cars. MY mate has a cento gearbox thats nothing like ive ever seen before... it dont drive cups on the diff output. the driveshafts go INTO the gearbox. so its all internal!

I can also confirm this after a 200mile round trip to buy a 6speed only to find out when i got home that it is bonded:mad:

So some of these diffs have bolt on, some have bonded. Is there any reason why, if you had a bonded one, you couldn't order a bolt on crownwheel as a Fiat part, fit that to this diff and put that in the existing casing/gearbox? Or is my mechanical noobery showing? :)

Sure, if you're brave enough to order one that you think does have a bolted crown. BTW, it costs more than your Quaife diff you just bought!

What I was getting at was that if the gearboxes are internally the same except for bonded/bolted crownwheels, surely you could just order a crownwheel, bolt it to this diff and you're good to go? At least I hope that's possible if my gearbox ends up having a bonded one. I don't really fancy collecting gearboxes until I find one that works :)

I actually did understand what you said. My mistake was searching through ePer and only finding complete diffs which cost £700. Looking at Seicento Sportings shows up a crownwheel for £120 which ain't that bad. If, like me, you have a nearly new or very low milage box that turns out to have the wrong diff, it makes even more sense to do this as there is some risk in putting a worn part into a new box.
 
Right. Off to J333EVO's mates place this weekend to drop of the gearbox and diff. Then when it's done, swap it into the 500 in time for the Nurburgring trip in early Sept. Woo!
