Im slowly coming to the conclusion that we have a problem with the alternator bearings.

BUT... what about this very light sounding constant rattling in the background. If the car was standing and i press my gas pedal and release it you can hear it rattle away as the belts are turning in the engine.

Do you guys think that this could also be related a faulty alternator bearings or even a faulty alternator... or has the mechanic just done a **** poor job in fitting my cambelt kit. Maybe, something has come loose when he put the cam belt kit on?

I suggested alternator bearings in Post 2....

Just try running he engine for a very short time with the alternator drive belt removed and save yourself time....

The constant rattling in the background as everything turns in the engine department is an existing problem, which occurred at the same time as the squeals and whining noise - 2 weeks after the cam kit change.

Could faulty alternator bearings also cause rattling noise from the engine as the belts turn?

Its easy to try as suggested, take the alternator belt off and run he engine up, if the noise is still there its not the alternator.:bang:

UPDATE:

Thank you for all your help guys and lets keep the fiat community going! I bet this site helps us all to save so much money in silly garage costs. (y)

Anyways, I found out the cause of the rattle this afternoon. The heat shield was bolted on more tight, the cam belt cover was broken so that was put together with cable ties and a little drill, and the little bracket holding the front exhaust pipe was removed because it was almost splitting.

My lesson as far as the rattle goes is that I thought it was something to do with the cam belt change. I was wrong, it was the good old heat shield again.

As far the squealing/whining noise goes, it seems to stop when you lift the oil filler cap so that still remains a mystery. Im just going to leave that problem for now and see how it develops. If anyone reading this knows why this happens then please let us all know.

HELP!! Would you get a rattle after a cam belt kit change if not put on correctly?

Hi all,

Im going through one of those where everything is happening at the same time with my poor Punto.

I have got a rattle after a cam belt kit change. I have bolted down all the heat shields etc, and I thought that I had solved it. I was wrong!

The rattle is not there all the time. It happen when I release the gas pedal, and let the car move, and the Punto just rattles away. Its coming from the engine.

In addition, I am getting a squealing noise on cold start. Many of you guys have suggested tensioner or alternator bearings for that problem. I had a stand off with the garage who insists that the tensioner and bearings is defo not the problem, because he insists that the noise stops when the oil fil cap is lifted. He mentioned 'breather' and air going through the engine bit

Also, I have a minor oil leak on the coil pack area, which needs an O ring.

Any suggestions on this rattle???

Should I believe the garage mechanic on the cause of the cold start squealing?

The garage mechanic says that the squealing and the rattles is absolutely nothing to do with him. The garage fit the cam belt kit

Im seriously confused. Im not technical at all. Im at a stage where im thinking of just getting rid of the car.

Please help.

ps. Thank you to marty61, ffoxy, davren, bruce400 and others have contributed so far.. Please keep your suggestions coming if you get any other ideas after putting everything else mentioned together.

Kind Regards

Check the crankcase breather tube/s are clear of gunk. Are you sure the rattle isn't coming from the transmission/clutch ?
Could be pre ignition (pinking) if the timing is slightly out after belt change

Now i'm going to hang myself (sound of footsteps down garden path and shed door opening) :p
