I have a massive crack in the windscreen of my 1996 Punto 55SX. Its almost bottom to top, so definately needs changing.
100% my fault, trying to lever off a seized on windscreen wiper arm! :bang:

Anyway, enough of my stupidity, what I wish to know is, Is the windscreen on a Mk1 bonded on, or is it a simple case of releasing it from the rubber strips surrounding the screen?
A local breaker has offered me a second hand replacement for £40, plus £45 if I want it fitted/bonded.

Advise please.

an independent windscreen fitter should be able to fit a brand new screen for this kind of money £90
ask who the trade use locally at a s/h car pitch etc

Thanks to all who replied. I will look at the breakers screen. If good, I will take up the fitting offer. Otherwise as suggested I will follow up with local s/h dealers to see who they use.
Fortunately the Punto is currently off-road (Until Feb 1st) so the pressure is off.

90 quid for s/h windscreen is a good price. But will it be guaranteed?

A new one may not be much more dearer than that (if it is at all). The trade is quiet and there are plenty of small businesses desperate for the work.

Let me know your whereabouts and I'll put you in touch with someone (I know most of the gooduns around the UK).

Good luck whichever you choose.

Are you not fully comp? Only cost's £75 and you get a brand new one fitted. Sounds like a good price for a second hand one though, have a scout about see if you find cheaper.

Get a decent screen from Autoglass (y)
If you need it doing you might as well get it done properly.

TBF, a MkI Punto is not the sort of job an acknowledged/experienced installer can get wrong (but I have seen some shockers at every level!).

If the OP does have glass cover, there may be a preferred repairer/supplier stipulation; one of whom has already been mentioned. Not all policies are as restrictive, therefore you can go with your own preferred supplier.

I would look at having it done by a trained pro as most cars use the windscreen as part of the structure. Also imagine what a mess it would make if it leaked! At least the proper company would be insured for that.

I was about to suggest the same. Get a decent screen from Autoglass (y)

No such thing as a decent screen from autoglass unless you assist on a OEM screen, and even then half the time they don't seem to fit them correctly from experience. (n)

Whoever does it and whatever the price, make sure the wipers and wiper cowl is removed. There is no excuse or justification for leaving these parts on (apart from knocking off time).

It is also important to note the condition of the paintwork around the pinchweld area once the screen has been removed. A lot of guys will mark the paint with the blade of a knife (chisel is best). It's all very well them offering to paint it black, but the point is NOT to so careless as to scratch it in the first place?!
