Hi guys I after some help regards my punto it started rattling/knocking when started after about 60 seconds the knocking would stop its been like this for about 2 months it sounds like its coming from where the cambelt is but you can also hear it if you put your head near the sump any help will be very appreciated

I presume it has oil in? We have one like this comes into work and have come to the conclusion that the timing chain is shot. Customer won't pay for a new one so unable to confirm

*Could* be this:

Know of a Punto petrol that did this.

The cause of the problem was the cam belt tensioner not being correctly set. i.e mid tension position. On the petrol engine the tensioner is sprung load, as it is on the diesel engine as is designed to "float". This means that the tension pulley moves position all the time.

When the engine is cold it will run rougher/lumpier than when warm and this means the cam belt/tensioner move more than usual. If the tensioner has been set incorrectly then it will "bump" against it's end stop/limit of travel and create a knocking/tapping/rattle as the tension and belt whip about.

I had something very similar happen on my 8v JTD, I wasn't sure if the tensioner was failing, so I changed the belt and tensioner to be sure. 60 odd thousand miles later, it's still going strong :)

Ok thanks guys I know that the cambelt is due to be replaced maybe this could be the problem I didnt want to pay to get it replaced not knowing if it was going to be the problem would you guys recomend I replace this first ? There is 116k on the clock and still on the original cambelt.
