Hi Guys & Gals,

I've just joined and need a little help, my daughter has a Punto Sporting (2b) 1.4 on a 2005 plate and I've done a few things on it so far, ( coil packs, battery, starter motor and steering motor ecu), it's a very clean little car and she does love it and wishes to bring it down to Bournemouth next week when she starts Uni, however, when we bought it 6 months ago it had a very stiff clutch pedal which I put down to a possible faulty slave cylinder but she seemed to get used to it and it didn't seem to bother her so I never checked it any further, yesterday she was on the M25 when there was a loud bang and then drive to the wheels was lost. The AA brought the car back last night and I had a look this morning and noticed that there was clutch fluid and also the clutch release arm missing and a couple of ball bearings scattered around, I'd assumed that the release bearing had disintegrated and decided to take the gearbox out to check, indeed it was the release bearing that had gone but due to the speed of travel it completely demolished the pressure plate as well, no problem as I'll fit another clutch. The problem that I have and need advice on is that the aluminium guide that the release bearing locates onto (which is part of the bell housing) has broken off!! My question is can a bellhousing from another Fiat gearbox fit the one in my daughters car? Any help ASAP would be very much appreciated as I need to get the car back on the road for by Friday (no pressure then:bang:) for trip down to Bournemouth and somehow work in between :bang:

Hi Andy, thanks for your reply, the only numbers I can find are one which is 55182974 and then directly below that 6/2, I'm just wondering if I buy a standard gearbox for 2b punto would the bellhousing fit my daughters gearbox, I'm uninclined to change the whole gearbox as I feel it would be a bit of a gamble with it and I know hers is a goodun.

Wait - you've only damaged the bell housing?

or only the Clutch release fork?

If the bell housing has been smashed to pieces because of the clutch arm been forced
Then find a Scrapped gearbox - the mk2 and mk2b 8v's share the same box
as its the same engine

Tbh while i was with the Box out - and bellhousing off - i'd seriously consider putting a new input seal and bearing too - because they are prone to failures
Also fill with Fresh fluid :)

Dont the 1.2 16v's also use it?

Ziggy

looking on eper (as fingers stated above) all mk2b 1.2 and 1.4 8v and 16v all used a variation of the same gearbox so the casing from any other gearbox from that period (1.2 or 1.4) will fit

Diesels all used different gear boxes entirely so are no good for this purpose, but as the differential is effectively part of the bell housing you'll want to make sure there is no difference in the final drive with yours being the sportier 1.4 16v

and as Ziggy points out its worth changing the bearing and seal while its in bits

Hi Andy, many thanks again, I did right off a gearbox from a diesel as I'd assumed they'd be different due to the torque differences from the engines, I will call around and find a box today and Ziggy thanks for the tip, I will order a new bearing and seal also. Many thanks for tips and advice guys, till next time (there will be a next time won't there!!?)

Regards
