Hi,
I'm fed up with the mechanical speedometer of my punto. I recently changed the clutch and once again, no suprises, that horrible thing stopped working. And of course, our national MOT won't like that.

I did some research and realised that some puntos have an electronic sensor whilst having the same plastic gear inside the gearbox. One would only have to change the speedometer in the instrument cluster with an electronic unit. It seems that the speed sensor doesn't talk with the ECU, just the motor in the dial.

Did anyone made the change or investigate more on that ?

thanks !

My Mk1 has both, an output for a mechanical cable driven speedo, and wires for an electronic speed sensor.

This is how a lot of cars of this era worked before the move over to fully electronic speedos.

I am however not sure that any Mk1 puntos, 176 models, had an electronic dial in the dash, I think they were all cable.

However you could easily make your own fully electronic speedo dial with something like an Arduino and some tutorials online.

This is an opportunity for you to investigate it, make that modification and write a Guide about it.

Should be plug & play, if you change the instrument cluster for proper type.
Then add a wiring to the sensor maybe (some cars had that from the factory, connector, plug, was hanging there freely, unused).

Schematics (last few pages, speed sensor is item number 22): https://staff.planet.ee/punto/El_skeem.pdf ⚡
Adding rev. counter is a different topic: https://www.fiatforum.com/threads/how-to-wire-up-a-rev-counter-on-the-mk1-punto-s.77439/page-3

Hi , my gt has the electronic speed sensor, it connects to a plug inside the engine bay not directly to the speedometer. You may need some additional wiring to get it to work.
