Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting a Punto 1.9 JTD but I want the 100bhp version (approx!!)

Does anyone know what year Punto has this engine in?

I've "heard" that remapping these gives you 128bhp/260lb ft with 65mpg'ish, plus a slipping clutch but I guess these can be uprated :O) ??

Any help much appreciated

Stefan

The 1.9 JTD only came in 80bhp and later on 85bhp form in the Mk2, however I think the Mk2b HGT JTD came with around 100bhp so this might be the version you're referring to.

The Mk2b HGT JTD is really rare so you will pay a premium for it, if you've got the extra money then it's worth going for as it has a much nicer spec than the Mk2 JTD, it has disc brakes all round, nicer interior, more refined engine (it's multijet), better mpg, etc.

The Mk2 JTD can be safely remapped to around 130bhp & 210lbft torque, the standard clutch is fine for this as long as it's in good condition. If you go any more than this you will need an uprated clutch and there's not many options for this, I think only one person has done this and they were running 160bhp.

Brilliant, thanks for the info there mate. I only have a budget of around £3000'ish so a mk2 jtd will do just fine .. although I've seen some 80bhp mk2 versions, they must've introduced the 85bhp later in the model run. Does it matter much?

Now I just need to find somewhere fairly local to me (West Yorkshire) to get a good remap. Any recommendations welcome :O)

I bought my mk2 1.9 JTD from 2000 for about £2500, came already with tinted windows , Momo alloy wheels 16" and brand new tyres Accelera, sports springs, rear spoiler, performance filter, abarth skirts .. etc
I was going to buy a VW Golf TDI , when i saw this punto i just felt in love with it .. :p
Anyway is not easy , i spent about 1 month or more searching for a car on internet, before to buy this punto .
I have seen puntos jtd for much less then your budget , you just need a good search ..;)
Good luck !(y)

It doesn't matter, as standard they will feel the same to drive and they can be remapped to the same power so it really doesn't matter if you get the 80bhp or 85bhp version. (y)

Thanks for all the help guys, this makes it much easier. The only thing is now to find somewhere fairly locally to get a remap done. Anyone know of any tuners near West Yorkshire?

I don't, I'd recommend going down to Watford and getting GSR/Red Dot to remap it for £199, that includes a before and after RR run so you can see the power gains so you know exactly what you're getting for your money.

If you don't want to travel then Angel Tuning will come to your house and do it for around £250-300 IIRC, but they don't seem to be rated very highly on these forums.

Ok, it looks like you've used Angel Tuning ... what do you reckon?

They are good in the fact that they come out to your house/place of work to do the remap so it is more convenient but all they do is flash a premade map file onto your ECU without using a RR so you can't see the gains. Also some people on this forum who have had Angel Tuning remaps have lost power over the standard figure after their ECU has finished relearning.

I'm going to the RR day tomorrow in Watford and will be getting a RR run so I can see what power the Angel Tuning remap is making on my car.

Could you explain what you mean with this? I have the feeling my punto is losing power as well after it's initial remap. Could you tell me how this works so I can ask my tuner about it?

Got my Punto on Saturday, its a nice really well-looked after car.
I'm thinking of uprating the clutch as I'd like to go for around 160bhp ...

anyone know where I can find one capable of taking over 200lbs/ft torque?

There isn't an off the shelf one, you will need to get it custom made by a clutch manufacturer.

If you're wanting to take the car to 160bhp and 200lbft+ torque then you will also want to uprate the gearbox, I don't think it can take much more than 125bhp/195lbft torque. Maybe a gearbox from a 16v JTD will fit? Possibly from an Alfa?

160bhp has been achieved, iirc the turbo was changed and the clutch was a standard valeo one, i don't know what the torque was

red dot have one with 210lbs of torque, it has a racing clutch (not suitable for everyday driving) and the standard gearbox, which iirc can handle upto 250lbs

It's more likely you are getting used to it

Over a time period the ECU will monitor how it's being driven and adjust how the car runs according to this and what it thinks is best. The ECU when flashed this data will be wiped and it will re-learn. Take a few hundred miles for it to learn fully and it can adapt in the meantime to things like ambient temparature, cetane ratings, air density and so on.

Before RR sesions in my Fabia I would rest the ECU with the software and give it a good italian tune up before hand. Bit pointless really as BHP is only good for impressing your mates but I enjoyed it at the time.

I can't help thinking that this is a lot of potch. You want the power and the economy but this will always come at a cost. You cant always have your cake and eat it you know :D

If you want to take a 100hp JTD up to 160bhp it will cost you about £3k (Maybe a lot more if the internals are not up to it) not including the mods you will need to make to the rest of the car. You will need a hybrid turbo and manifold, FMIC, possibly uprated injectors and a better exhaust. You will then need a decent custom remap. 160bhp and over 200lb/ft will be pretty pointless in a daily driver as you will never be able to use the power and when you can you will never get it down on the road unless you spend even more on tricking up the transmission (LSD - £800) and then keep it on the road without upgrading the suspension (Braces, Shocks, Springs, ARB's - £1000) Then you have to stop it which means you need to upgrade the brakes and tyres (Bigger discs etc £400? Quality tyres £300?).... It goes on and on. Some people mod to extreme and really push the envelope because they love it and money isn't an object. For them it's a bonafide hobby. A mate of mine is running about 300bhp and 400lb/ft in his Fabia with nitrous. This has cost him about £25k over the last 5 years and required a lot of time with Allards, most people think he is as dumb as a stump for not just buying something hot in the first place but he has something truely unique and amazing and that why he is happy with it and will probably be driving it for years.

Not trying to pour water on your dreams but you need to be realistic about it. This type of modding requires serious stones. If you got them and you have the money then go for it. If not there might have been better cars to start with that would give you want you needed without the mods (y)

A mate of mine had a Multipla 1.9JTD which Angel Tuning mapped to 160bhp. It was reliable while he had it, that much I know.

If that figure would put too much strain on things, I'd be probably be happy with 120-130bhp.

My last car had coilovers (not good on a light car) which led to a bumpy ride and loss of grip over rough roads, and massive brakes which easily locked up, despite the ABS.

This time I will be fitting an Eibach Pro spring kit, Greenstuff pads and maybe braided hosing, I can't see the need for upgrading braking further as it just makes it easier to lock up, and that's not much fun. This should be better for all-round use.

Also, I know that AZMOTORS on ebay has 2 performance clutches for the JTD, an organic sports clutch for £175 and a paddle clutch for £350 I think.

Forgot to mention, I'm also planning to upgrade tyres to Toyo T1R or something equally good all-round.

I've recently had FK Silverline coilovers fitted to my JTD, I highly recommend them - the ride isn't too bumpy/harsh and it grips very well in the corners. (y)

I didn't know there was an off the shelf uprated clutch for the Mk2 JTD, you got a link to it?

I'm getting Toyo Proxes T1-R fitted next week, good tyre for the price. :)

I've looked more in to the AZMOTORS clutches and they told me the torque ratings are 65lbs/ft and 120lbs/ft respectively, which doesn't make any sense. Here's the
1
link.

I've found another through ebay which sounds more promising. The link
1
here is for an Alfa clutch but they do them for the Punto aswell.

Re: the coilovers, maybe it was because I got D2's ... although they are designed for track use. The car was good handling and ride on smooth roads, but anything else and it wasn't so good.
