Technical Punto 1.2 Sporting 2002 16v - Engine Cut Out

Hey everyone,

So the weather has been shocking and i have been waiting to get my car back from having a new bonnet release fitted.

Managed to fit the oil breather pipe this morning, sprayed a load of carb cleaner down the air pipe but didnt get any black smoke out the rear and it just kept cutting out even at high revs.

Turned the car on and hey presto the engine light went off and it didnt idle at low revs before going up to 900 just went straight there.

Took it around the block and it happened again, engine light came on and car stalled. Engine light has stayed on and when i start the car now it idles at around 400 rpm and sound slike its struggling to keep running.

Anybody got anymore ideas?

I am assuming the engine light that has come on is just going to say MAP sensor again.

I'm lost and seem to have run out of options... :(

Thanks,

Kyle

i already said this but not sure about diagnosis

if the garage gave you a quote to fix the fault and the fault is still there it's now up to them to fix it take it back you wont have to pay another penny if they refuse threaten to take them to trading standards they'll soon change tune

think about it you payed them x amount to fix it it's not fixed

if you payed a plumber x amount to fix a water leak and it still leaked you'd expect it fixed free of charge simple as that why should a car be any diferent

howether if the garage advised you that it may or may not fix the fault it's in your ball court then

at the end of the day they them selves may fit a hole load new parts to your car or may have to send it to fiat but you'll get it fixed and in most cases like this involving dodgy workmanship you'll end up with allot of new parts you didnt need aswell quids in

like my uno for example before i got it and diagnosed faulty fuel pump it had new throttle body new lambda new plugs and leads new water temp sensor allsorts simply cos someone asumed a little bit of fuel coming out the injector meant it was working

as a fiat tech i can tell you there are no common causes of map sensor faults on your model of car

the breather pipe coming off would mean an excess of oxigen compared to blow buy from the crank case meaning idle would be off but should not cause any faults and not alter manifold presure as the pipe diameter is still the same and it will not draw any more air just oxigen rich air

the ecu would aventually lear this out and idle would return to normal

to look into your fault there are two roots i can see that could cause it

firstly and most obviouse the wiring is faulty could try wrigling the wiring harness about and see if it makes any diference but idealy it need checking thourly with a multimeter most specifically the powers and earths to the sensors i believe the map uses a 5v common reference feed from ecu this also feeds other sensors that could be faulty diminishing the suply to earth and causing the ecu to think the map is faulty when it's something else to diagnose this you need to start unpluging other sensors that use the same feed like maybe water temp for example may use it but again without wiring diagram i couldn't say

the other train of thought is why does the ecu think it's a map sensor

to figure this out you need to figure out how the ecu diagnoses it's map sensor

to do this the ecu knows that at a given rpm and throttle opening the presure should be x amount or within xx xx either side of that when the readings are outside of that it flags a fault

it can also determin what kind of fault it's looking at but cheaper non fiat equipment will not tell this

for exampole is it out of range reading too high reading to low signal unfeasible open circuit closed circuit and so on

Hey Everyone,

Just to let you know i gave the throttle body a good clean out yesterday and fired a full can of carb cleaner down the air filter pipe at high revs.

Did a good 100 miles of urban diving yesterday with no problems whatsoever. No engine light, no intermittent idling. Just smooth start ups and driving.

Thanks to everyone as well who contributed to helping me find the problem i really appreciate it.

Touch wood its fixed now, however if i have any other problems i know what to look at next and no doubt i will post it on this thread again haha.

Thanks

Kyle
